How to Find Your Style in 4 Easy Steps

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJSU chapter.

Developing a personal style can be difficult, especially when you are constantly consuming social media content that showcases the hottest micro-trends of the month –  okay, more like a week. “Micro-trends are cheap, stylish fashion items that are designed to last until the end of the current season and are often born from the screens of social media.”, according to a September 2021 article by Pavement Pieces.

To curate a personal style, it’s important to get out of your comfort zone and venture out into new aesthetics and brands.  You are inevitably going to hate some trends or find that some styles don’t suit your personality, but this is how you will discover what you like.

To jumpstart your fashion journey, here are some tips and tricks to help find your style.

  1. Create a Pinterest board

Pinterest is a wonderful tool to help you find fashion inspiration. Start off with searching for specific clothing items you like to wear and style aesthetics you would like to try out (Ex: “streetwear”, “cottagecore”, “grunge fairy”, etc.).

Pin images or videos that inspire you and create boards for styles you are interested in.

  1. Leave it in your cart

When shopping online, it’s easy to just add an item to your cart without a second look. It’s time to kick that habit to the curb!

If you see something you like on a store’s website, add it to your cart and leave it there for a few weeks or a month.

When you revisit and you love it, that’s your sign to get it. If you don’t love it, then it wasn’t meant to be.

  1. Invest in your clothing

Shop for clothes you know you will wear for a long time. Investing in your wardrobe will put less strain on your bank account and it will benefit you in the long run. Most importantly, it will help you get the most wear out of your wardrobe.

Building a timeless wardrobe is sustainable and convenient. It also saves you time and money.

  1. Stay away from the trends

Trends come and go. The rise of fast fashion causes the lifespan of today’s trends to quickly die out.

There’s a new trend every week and it would be unsustainable and financially burdensome to keep up with these trends.

Try to invest in basics and stick to clothing that you would get the most wear out of.
