My hopes for the 2022 Met Gala were not high. Partially because the last one was in September and partially because it had disappointed me tremendously. Regardless, I was excited to see what could be done with the theme this year, which was “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” with a dress code of Gilded Glamor and White Tie. Despite the disappointment that Rihanna, Zendaya, Beyonce, and Lady Gaga’s absences caused, I would say that there were some outfits that made the red carpet worth watching.
To begin: Megan thee Stallion. The breakout singer was by far my favorite look this year. She was wearing a beautiful golden gown with feathers all along her shoulders and a glittery-mash waistline. Her look was able to match the theme the perfect amount without looking like she was trying too hard. She looked absolutely breathtaking and was so easily able to pull off the all gold look, which many have failed to do. Next, Emma Chamberlain. This may be an unpopular opinion, but she deserves a lot more credit for this look. She was wearing a white skirt with a cropped peasant blouse top. She matched it with a classy bleach-blonde bob that really put the look together. Although I’m able to understand why people were initially bothered by some influencers’ attendances, I don’t believe Emma falls into that category anymore. She has single handedly started many fashion trends that have reached as far as high fashion does while continuously staying unproblematic. Her look matched the theme to a T and exceeded the high expectations I already had.
Now let’s talk about Lenny Kravitz. A singer/songwriting legend. His look reminded me of how everyone went all out at the 2018 Met Gala, and I honestly did not expect him to go all out this year. He wore a black lace corset button-up and gorgeous cross necklaces that cascaded down the blouses neckline. Matched with leather pants and Johnny Depp-esque boots that didn’t really get the attention they deserved.His look was really well put together and definitely made up where others lacked this year. My favorite nepotism sisters also really went all out at this Met Gala. Although she strayed a little from the theme, Gigi Hadid’s look was so artistically beautiful that there was no way she wouldn’t have made this tier. She rocked a gorgeous matching red leather set, but the jacket was a little too much for me. Bella, on the other hand, kept in lines with the theme while still being original and unique. She wore an elegant black set with futuristic vibes that can be debatably disapproved for the met gala. A little more could have been done with accessories and makeup, but that’s about it.
Now Dove Cameron’s outfit really took me by storm. Some credit is due to Cameron but mostly to fashion designer, Iris van Herpen. The dress was just breathtaking and although it didn’t really fit the theme, I honestly would still rather be able to see her in this dress than not. She wore a white extra-terrestrial spiral gown that reminded me of an alien skeletal system. This was not Iris van Herpen’s only appearance tonight, since Winnie Harlow’s look seemed to knock it out of the park as well with her white tutu-esque dress. I would say that her dress matched the theme enough, definitely more than Dove. The headpiece really pulled the look together.
Overall, those who went all out, really went all out. I think although there were some big misses this year I don’t think it’s fair for me to critique something that I would always be too scared to do.
