Hiking Through Santa Barbara

One day last year, feeling particularly pent-up in my three-bedroom apartment shared with ten other girls, I decided on a whim to dig out my hardly-worn hiking boots and venture into the Los Padres National Forest.

The moment I stepped onto that trail, crisp air filling my lungs, I felt the forest strip away my stress and anxiety. With every step I took, met by the sound of chirping birds and the gentle rustle of leaves, reality seemed to fade farther and farther away. For the first time in months, I felt like I could breathe. I was hooked.

From that point on, hiking has become my favorite outlet and escape from the chaos of everyday life. And for good reason— studies have shown spending time in nature creates a connection between humans and their environment, contributing to happiness even when one is not immersed in nature.

If you’re in the mood for some movement, I highly recommend taking the time out of your day to explore one of these Santa Barbara trails.

Jesusita Trail

Jesusita Trail holds a special place in my heart. 6.8 miles there and back, this moderate trail takes you peacefully up through the forest before breaking out to Inspiration Point, one of my favorite views in Santa Barbara. With a clearly-marked path and lots of friendly faces, this trail is one of my favorites to solo hike.

Cathedral Peak

Speaking of views, this hike will not disappoint—but I won’t lie, it’s not for the faint of heart. This trail is basically 2.3 miles of uphill rock scrambling, and then 2.3 miles of getting back down. However, when I tell you the view is worth it, I mean it. Make sure to bring a hiking buddy on this one, as it can be easy to lose the trail, and always pack a headlamp if you’re hiking at dusk!

Rattlesnake Canyon

This trail is an up-and-down 4.4 mile hike through the forest. When I did this one with my friends, we might’ve taken a wrong turn because it popped us out on a random road. Nonetheless, with a creek and thick foliage, the trail was breathtaking.

San Ysidro

If you decide to take on San Ysidro, go in the morning and pack your sunscreen, snacks, and water because it’s a long one. 8.6 miles there and back, this uphill battle will leave you feeling incredibly satisfied by the time you reach the top. While most of the hike is uphill and exposed, you have a beautiful view of the ocean all the way up.

We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful region. If you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or simply need a break from life, take advantage of the landscape and give yourself some nature time. You won’t regret it!
