“Me Don’t Mean a Thing Without You”: Saying “I Love You” With Music This Mother’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Winona chapter.

One of the most powerful ways to share a message is through song, so I thought what better way to say “I love you” this Mother’s Day than with a song that says everything you want to say. Whether you choose one song or an entire playlist, taking the time to send your mom a song or play it for her is a sure way to make her day.

Here, I’ve compiled a list of songs from a variety of genres (but, let’s be honest, it’s mostly country) that just say it best.

“Your Mama” by Jason Aldean

Remind your mom (and yourself) that you’ll always be your mama’s little baby. Life may get in the way, but we’re so blessed to have our mamas.

“Without You” by Luke Combs & Amanda Shires

This song can be a tribute to both parents to thank them for all the sacrifices they’ve made (and still make) for you.

“Mamas” by Anne Wilson (feat. Hilary Scott)

Thank God for making your mom and all the blessing she brings into your life.

“Meanwhile Back at Mama’s” by Tim McGraw & Faith Hill

Tim McGraw reminds us in this song that no matter how far we go, Mom is always waiting for us to come back.

“Mother” by Kasey Musgraves

This short song is for all the people whose mothers are in heaven who miss their mother on Mother’s Day. I have no doubt this holiday is so hard for you, but I urge you to celebrate her memory even in her absence.

“Stacy’s Mom” by Fountains of Wayne

Tell your mom how hot she is by playing “Stacy’s Mom.”

“Carrying Your Love With Me” by George Strait

Going to college or working a long way from home can be hard on Moms and their babies. Remind your mom that you carry her love with you wherever you go.

“A Letter to My Mama” by Vince Gill

Sometimes calls can’t do our love justice––write your mom a letter, both to write down your feelings and for her to have a keepsake that she’ll cherish forever.

“Mr. Mom” by Lonestar

Being a mom is hard, but you have no idea how hard until you’ve become one. Recognize the challenges your mom has faced for you and thank her for always stretching herself thin to give you the best life.

“I Called Mama” by Tim McGraw

On the hardest of days, the best remedy is simple––call your mom. Whether it’s Mother’s Day or a random Tuesday, she’ll love every second you spend together, no matter the distance between you.

“A Song For Mama” by Boys II Men

Thank your mom for being your first love, and remind her that you’ll always be the one constant in your life.

“Mother” by Sugarland

This song can be a comforting reminder that you’re never alone because your mother is always by your side.

“In My Daughter’s Eyes” by Martina McBride

Tell your mama how much you admire her by showing her what she looks like through your eyes.

“Dear Mama” by Tupac

Life may not be always for mothers––especially single, low-income mothers––but their appreciation should be elevated in recognition of all the challenges they’ve faced in order to raise you.

“She Don’t Know She’s Beautiful” by Sammy Kershaw

Your mom may be humble like mine, but don’t forget to remind her that she’s beautiful in your eyes.

“Don’t Forget to Remember Me” by Carrie Underwood

Leaving for college is hard for students, but it’s even harder for mothers to letter their babies go. Assure your mom that no matter how far you go, you’ll always love her.

“Mama” by the Spice Girls

As a kid you may not have understood, but now there’s no denying that your mom is your best friend in adulthood.

“Mother” by Overcoats

This song about a mother’s love for her son assures me about the lengths a mother will go to protect their children.

“Mother’s Day” by Kellie Pickler

Celebrate Mother’s Day with an eponymous song that sums up the spirit of the day.

“A Mother Like You” by JJ Heller

This song about a mother’s perfect love is a reminder of how amazing your mom was during your childhood––and still is.

“Watch You Be a Mother” by Johnny Diaz

Written from the husband’s perspective, this song is written about a man who gets to watch his life become an amazing mother to his children.

“It Won’t Be Like This for Long” by Darius Rucker

Life moves fast and it flashes by before we know. Planning for the future is great, but relish in today and enjoy life’s simple pleasures.

“Let Them Be Little” by Lonestar

I’m sure a mother it feels like you blink and your newborn is eighteen. This song is a reminder of how fast time flies, and how we should let kids be little before urging them to grow up.

“You’re Gonna Be” by Reba McEntire

Reba McEntire shares a Mom’s wish about all the dreams a mother has for her child.

If you’re interested in any of these songs, check them out on this Mother’s Day playlist I’ve curated.
Don’t forget to say I love you this Mother’s Day––whether it be through song, card, flowers, words, or all of the above. Tell your mom how thankful you are for everything she’s done for you and remind her that her efforts do not go unnoticed.
