Ranking the “Sex and the City” Characters from Most to Least Likable

Warning: Spoilers and unpopular opinions ahead.

When I was cooped up in my room last week battling strep throat and the flu, I had nothing but time—and I spent most of that time binge-watching “Sex and the City.” After careful consideration, I have come up with a ranking of the four main characters, and rationales to back up these rankings dating all the way back to the early seasons.

Miranda Hobbes

Miranda comes in at the number one spot for her fiery personality and her loyalty as a friend. I have the utmost respect for Miranda, as she does not feel the need to change herself to fit societal norms and she is proud of her success. Her Harvard Law School education might scare away some men for how much more successful she is than them, but Miranda remains proud of her job as a partner at a law firm. Miranda takes the ‘single mother’ title to the next level. I also love how Miranda always points out the double standard there is for men and women in the dating world—at one moment she mentions how if a man is 30 years old and single, he is seen as an eligible bachelor, yet when a woman is 30 and single, it is seen as sad.

Samantha Jones

Samantha is the most entertaining one of the girls, as her sense of humor and wild personality bring light to the show. My favorite thing about Samantha is her unconventional take on the dating world. She does not tie herself down to one person and instead focuses on her own pleasure and happiness that she does not need from a man. They often refer to Samantha as though she has sex “like a man” since she can be with many different people and not develop an emotional connection, but she owns it. The only issue I have with Samantha is that I feel like she is oversexualized in the show. I like that they make her character extremely carefree and open with her sexuality, but I think they make sex too much of her personality as if men are the only thing she cares about.

Charlotte York

I have a sort of love-hate relationship with Charlotte and my opinion of her tends to change every episode. On one hand, I have respect for Charlotte as she is not afraid to go after what she wants. For example, some of my favorite scenes of Charlotte show her standing up to Bunny, Trey’s (her first husband) overly-involved mother. On the other hand, I find Charlotte’s opinions on love and relationships unrealistic and over-optimistic. She is always giving men the benefit of the doubt when her friends are going through relationship problems. I always agree with Miranda and Samantha over Charlotte when they are giving advice to Carrie about her endless relationship issues.

Carrie Bradshaw

Although she is the main character, I find Carrie the least likable out of the four women. The first thing I want to address is Carrie’s Achilles heel—Mr. Big. The back-and-forth romance between the two is tiring to keep up with, and I find it hard to sympathize with her when she constantly gives him more chances than he deserves. My main issue with the Carrie-Mr. Big storyline is the fact that she cheated on Aidan with him. Aidan was undoubtedly the best love interest Carrie had in the show, yet she had a full-on affair with Mr. Big during their relationship. This was the last straw for me, and in my opinion, secured Carrie’s spot at the bottom of my list. Throughout the show, she constantly steers the conversation to make it about herself, or more specifically, her boyfriend problems. To be fair, she is always there to support her friends when they need her, but I feel like she focuses on her own problems far more than she does on her friends. While this may be an unpopular opinion, I stand by my decision of ranking Carrie as the least likable character in the show.
