Stunting into Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Brown chapter.

This past Wednesday we experienced a day that was, for lack of a better term, classic Brown. The temperature rose above 60° and the main green immediately filled up with not only people, but people dressed in absolutely fabulous head-to-toe fits. I, on the other hand, stepped onto the green in a pair of bat mitzvah sweatpants, a Justin Bieber T-shirt, and a ratty pair of sneakers with mismatched socks. It was then that I decided to turn over a new leaf– that this is, in fact, the spring to stunt. Here are some outfit ideas I’ve been brainstorming:

1. Silky skirts

Whether it’s floral or monochrome, long or short, a silky skirt never disappoints. What a classic yet perfect spring look. I’ve never seen a girl in a silky skirt on the main green that I didn’t think was cute. Pair the silky skirt with a simple white T-shirt, a jean jacket, and a pair of sneakers, and you’re in business.

2. Neon

Nothing says girl boss like a lady in neon. I’ll admit, when I first saw the neon trend emerge on the Zara website, I thought but one thing: tacky. It seems, however, that we’ve achieved a new kind of neon– one that is refined, purposeful, and despite my initial shock, elegant. Neon orange? Go for it. Green? Why not. It’s exciting and vibrant, and I’m here for it.

3. Button-down Shirts.

For the days when your energy simply isn’t neon. The perfect excuse to raid your dad’s closet, oversized button-down shirts for women are decidedly hot. Start with a white tank top and a pair of light wash jeans. Throw on the button down as a kind of overlayer, leaving it mostly unbuttoned. It’s simple, it’s sophisticated, and it’s even a subtle jab at the patriarchy.

4. Monochrome

For some reason, I’ve always been sort of embarrassed to wear white pants with a white top, or black jeans with a black top. Maybe I thought there was something lazy about it. Now, however, I think a monochrome outfit is nothing short of chic. Maybe I’m maturing. Or maybe there’s something confident about monochrome– sexy even. Either way, catch me on the green next week in one color from head to toe.

5. Colorful jewelry

A wonderful edition to your monochrome fit, colorful jewelry keeps it vibrant and funky. Whether it’s a multicolored beaded necklace, or a mismatched selection of those fake enamel rings that keep popping up on my instagram feed, this trend is perfect for spring.

We’ll see how well this fashionista endeavor goes for me in practice, but in theory I’ll be strutting onto the main green on Monday, neon and all, a new woman. If these ideas aren’t for you, fair. It’s really just banter. The great thing about Brown is that I’ll see someone wearing something that I would absolutely never pick off a shelf, yet they look amazing. Maybe it’s confidence, or the sunshine. Regardless, I hope you all stunt this spring, whatever that may mean for you,
