When it comes to relationships, there is no perfect partner. It is unrealistic to expect your significant other to never make a mistake. It is also unrealistic to believe that you will not make any mistakes as well.  Effective communication allows you and your significant other to understand one another better while working through conflicts and helping your relationship thrive in the future. Striving to be a flawless partner is almost impossible, but there are ways to better yourself so that your relationship can flourish. I’ll be discussing some tips that helped me navigate my relationship, and hopefully, they will help you as well!

  1. Learn to apologize and own up to mistakes

Taking full accountability for your wrongdoings is so important in a relationship. Understanding why you were in the wrong and apologizing for it shows your partner that you care. Being unable to apologize and own up to their mistakes will likely create a toxic environment for themselves and their partner. As difficult as it can be to ignore stubborn tendencies, it is necessary if you want your relationship to progress. Apologizing and moving past the problem is much easier than constantly arguing due to stubbornness.

  1. Learn your partners and your love language

Learning how your partner likes to give love and receive love will make it easier to understand them.. For example, if they like to hear words of affirmation, tell them that you love them. Whether it’s a text or a written letter, words can mean a lot. it’s important to love your partner in the way they want to be loved rather than how you like to love others. Knowing your love language can also make it easier for your significant other to show how much you mean to them. Understanding how you want to receive love and communicating that to your partner can benefit a relationship significantly. My love language is quality time and I like having my partner’s company, whether it’s for a grocery store run or a vacation. If your partner knows how you want to be shown love, then they will have a better understanding of how to make you feel appreciated.

  1. Communicate; your partner can’t read your mind

Communicating so that there’s no room for assumptions to be made will help build trust in you and your partner. Assuming that your partner knows what you’re thinking can be a big mistake in a relationship. It’s important to tell your significant other everything so that they can be there for you and offer you any support necessary. If you tell your partner what’s bothering you, it will be easier to resolve the issue together. If you hide information or tell half-truths, the problem will never be fully fixed because you didn’t disclose everything. Allowing yourself to be transparent with your significant other will benefit you and your relationship.

  1. Show appreciation for them, no matter how big or small

It’s important to show that you’re grateful for any gesture, gift, or anything your partner may do to make you happy. Your significant other likely puts time and effort into doing nice things for you that you may not even realize, so it’s important to show that you appreciate them. Not feeling appreciated can be detrimental to a relationship. When someone feels like their actions aren’t being valued, they’ll pull back and be more reluctant. Even if it’s something as small as folding laundry or walking your pet, your partner deserves to know that you appreciate what they do!

Mistakes are bound to happen, and it’s important to be gracious to yourself and your partner. Perfection is practically impossible to achieve, so it’s okay if you are still working on being the best for yourself and your relationship. I hope that these tips were useful and helped you recognize areas in your relationship that may need more TLC.
