I have been a fan of low-rise jeans since the 2010s, and struggled to make the switch to high-waisted jeans when they became trendy in 2018. I bought several pairs of high-waisted jeans, but found them extremely uncomfortable and unflattering. High-waisted or high-rise jeans are capable of giving you a snatched waist, however when you sit down in them it can feel like you’re suffocating. I end up feeling too much pressure on my waist from the tight waistband whenever I try to sit down in class.

Which brings me to my first point, low-rise jeans allow your stomach to hang out comfortably. I like that when I sit-down in low-waisted pants, my stomach doesn’t feel like it’s trapped. I can actually sit comfortably without my waist hurting.

They can also be extremely flattering on your hips. I have curvier hips and I noticed that low-rise jeans accentuate my curves better than high-rise. Maybe it has to do with my height, I don’t know the exact science behind it but high-rise jeans awkwardly sit below my belly button and don’t flatter my body.

Shirts that pair well with low-rise jeans include baby tees, tank tops, long sleeves, knit sweaters or basically any top. They pair well with most outfits. Additionally, belts look super cute on low-rise jeans. You can also buy a button pin if your jeans don’t fit tight properly.

Don’t be discouraged by social media; every body type should wear whatever clothing they want. Currently there are many skinny influencers modeling low-rise jeans, but there are also plenty of curvy women modeling them as well. Tiktokers that post body positive videos in low-rise jeans are @brighteyezbabe, @luvjessicablair, @michaila.c and @lysthefatty.

Y2K fashion originally glamorized the idea of being stick thin and wearing crop tops with low-rise jeans, however it’s 2022 and we are taking back the trend. It should not be about being skinny enough to wear the jeans, it should be about embracing our bodies and being comfortable wearing whatever cute clothes we want to.

If you’re ballin on a budget, try shopping for low-rise pants at Target, Hollister, American Eagle, Forever 21, Garage and Shein.

If you have some extra funds, try brands such as PAIGE, SIWY, Hudson, 7 For All Mankind, True Religion, I.AM.GIA and Aritzia.
