The Importance of Romanticizing Your Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at USF chapter.

Life has its extraordinary moments, but it can also often become very dull. It’s so easy to find yourself waiting around for the next exciting thing—and missing all the small moments in between. Those minute, mundane moments don’t have to just be steppingstones to something more thrilling. Make them count!

You have probably seen people on social media talk about “romanticizing” their life and might be wondering what exactly that means. People romanticize their lives simply by taking little ordinary things and believing they are something exceptional. Why lay in bed and study when you can dress up and go to your favorite coffee shop or library? Why not have a 10-step skin care routine and drink water out of a mason jar with little lemon slices? Why eat dinner by yourself when you can have a picnic and watch the sun set? Why not dress up, do fun makeup, and take pictures on a random Tuesday?

There are, of course, many ways to do this without spending money. It doesn’t matter if you don’t want to splurge on fancy makeup or $6 coffees. Make coffee at home in your favorite mug and cuddle up with a good book. Listen to music that makes you feel like the main character in a movie on your morning drive to work. If the weather is nice, go for a walk or study outside; if it’s raining, snuggle up and watch the rain from your window with a candle burning. Wear whatever makes you feel good. Keep a journal and spill all your deepest thoughts and feelings. Clean your room with music blasting and sing at the top of your lungs. Even the smallest things can make a difference: try a new recipe, light a candle, tie a ribbon in your hair.

Romanticizing your life doesn’t have to fit a specific image. All that matters is that you appreciate the small moments and turn them into something beautiful. Don’t let life pass you by while you wait around for something exciting—seize every moment you can and turn it into one you can fall in love with.
