The Greatest Debate of our Generation: There is a Right Answer

On a boring afternoon, my friends and I were sitting in the dining hall, deciding what we were going to do for the rest of the night. I was on my phone scrolling through TikTok, as one who is bored often does. Within this time, I saw at least three videos come up of people sharing their opinion on the debate taking over the internet. I immediately turned to my friends and asked, “Which is there more of in the world: doors or wheels?” This quickly led to one of the longest debates I have ever been in. We sat there, in the Hickey dining hall for over two hours having this heated debate, and it still is often brought up in normal conversations.

Your initial thought to this idea is probably that the answer is doors, and not by a little but a lot. There are millions of doors in the world. Think about your dorm buildings, offices, and skyscrapers. Each one has hundreds or even thousands of doors. But that isn’t even all of them. There are locker doors in every middle and high school across the world, and everyone has a P.O. box secured with a little door to keep your mail safe. This makes it almost obvious right? The answer has to be doors. If you think this, then you, along with a decent amount of society, are wrong.

Like most things I talk about I am very passionate. Some would say I am stubborn and annoying about meaningless debates, like this one. I have very specific definitions for both doors and wheels that I feel need to be taken into account, due to many people on social media sharing their definitions, which are almost always extremely unsuitable to what these things truly are. I have seen people argue many times that advent calendars flaps count as doors and that gears count as wheels. Argue all you want, but these definitions just make you look stupid. My definition, the real definition of doors, is anything with the main purpose is to be an entrance from one area of space to another that is hinged, slides, or revolves. Similarly, my definition of a wheel is a circular object that revolves on an axle, used to make an object easily move.

With all being said, the only real answer to this debate is there are way more wheels than doors. Take a second and think about how many wheels you see and use every single day. Each car alone has four wheels to drive, a steering wheel, and sometimes a spare tire.

I know what you’re thinking, “Delaney, you idiot, each car has four doors.”

Ok, there are also semi-trucks that have like eighteen wheels (I honestly don’t know exactly how many I’m not a car girlie).

Still not convinced? Think about how many toy cars there are. That alone is an insane number, and most of the time those doors are not real doors. There are about 10 million Hot Wheels cars and trucks made EACH WEEK (I am a car girlie when it comes to Hot Wheels). Still not sold, wheely chairs, my classrooms have like thirty of those, and each one has FOUR WHEELS and how many doors in that classroom? ONE! ONE DOOR!

My roommate and I even did a little experiment to see which we have more of in our dorm room. We both have a rolling cart with four wheels and my roommate has a suitcase under her bed, so that’s twelve, plus each drawer, which we have 20 of, and there are two wheels of in each to make it move. Pull out your calculators kids! That is 52 wheels in our one dorm room! How many doors do we have? Our room door and we each have two dresser doors. So, there are 52 wheels and only five doors in our dorm room. If I have not convinced you yet that wheels are the only answer, you are just dumb and can no longer be helped.
