5 Feminist Themed Films to Celebrate International Women’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Exeter chapter.

On the Basis of Sex (Legal Drama)

Telling the story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s early career and cases in the US Supreme Court, this film mixes emotion, tension and history to portray the overturn of a century’s worth of gender discrimination.

If you’re looking for a film to inspire and move you on International Women’s Day, look no further than On The Basis of Sex, starring Chalet Girl’s Felicity Jones.

Available on Amazon Prime

Someone Great (Romantic Comedy)

Looking for something a little lighter this International Women’s Day? Someone Great, starring Gina Rodriguez, is all about female friendships. When Jenny (Rodriguez) gets dumped, she enlists her two best friends on a crazy, outrageous adventure to help her get over her ex. What follows is both hilarious and at times heartbreaking, but what carries the viewer through is the never-failing strength of the women’s friendship. Definitely one to watch with your group of close female friends to celebrate IWD this year.

Available on Netflix

Brave (Animation)

If you’re looking for some nostalgia, a warm-hearted animation, or just want to feel like a kid for the day, Brave is a great film to enjoy on International Women’s Day. Telling the story of a young girl having to reverse a curse placed on her family, it’s a great film to watch wrapped up in a cosy blanket with a cup of tea.

Available on Disney Plus

Jennifer’s Body (Horror)

Whilst this 2009 film did not go down well with critics upon release, since the #MeToo movement it has surged in popularity, earning the status as a cult classic. Whilst Jennifer’s Body can be referred to as a Horror film it also contains some hilarious tongue-in-cheek moments with a healthy mix of satire as well. Telling the story of the popular mean-girl turned man-eating succubus, if you’re in the mood for a somewhat scary, feminist film then this is the choice for you!

Available on Amazon Prime

Little Women (Coming of Age)

This popular 2019 re-telling of Louisa May Alcott’s famous novel is a perfect movie to watch this International Women’s Day. Telling the story of Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, the film focuses on the relationship between the four sisters and the complexities that follow. Starring Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, Emma Watson, Timothée Chalamet and Meryl Streep, this star-studded classic is a sure-fire way to enjoy this year’s International Women’s Day.
