Galentine’s Interview: Letting Go and Being Yourself with Lucy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Leeds chapter.

We all know when is Valentine’s Day celebrated and what it represents, but let’s talk about Galentine’s day. Galentine’s Day is about your girlfriends and is celebrated the day before Valentine’s Day. It is a day all about friendship and love for your female friends.

At Her Campus, we decided to celebrate Galentine’s day by partnering up with Her Campus Brighton by celebrating girls supporting girls! And so, let me first introduce you to this beautiful partner who I interviewed from Her Campus Brighton about ‘Letting go and Being Yourself’: Lucy Mae.

Lucy is 23 years old and is currently in her last year studying Business Management at Brighton University. She was born and brought up in Eastbourne – a town just outside of Brighton. She also used to work at the Council. Lucy likes to do yoga, go to the gym and go for walks with friends and her dog. She also likes to go shopping, dinners and bottomless brunches. Lucy as a person is very friendly, hard-working and creative.

When asked if she has ever been in a situation where she was shut down due to her occupation or personal feelings, she answered that she was the youngest in her team by around 20 years. The judgement that stemmed from this was incredible for her – despite having different interests, she could do the job just as well as her elder team members.

Lucy is a fun person who loves helping people out and talking to everyone. One thing she loves about herself, or her personality, is that she is very empathetic towards people. She likes to talk to and help people out when they are struggling with something and vice-versa.

For Lucy, letting go of things is accepting that things do not always go as planned: you may get a different result than you had hoped, you may change your mind, but either way, it is important to let go of expectations. If one does not let go of things, they cannot allow themselves to explore new opportunities. Things are not meant to stay in stasis forever – that is the whole point of life! One needs to experience things, if you hold on to something it is possible to simply get stuck.

When it comes to letting go, Lucy has a few ways to deal with it, by noticing her behaviour and holding herself accountable for things.  If she has spent too long dwelling on a problem or something that has happened, she snaps herself out of it and back in the present time, telling herself to move forward and not waste much time on something that has been done. As she says, and I quote, “if you can’t change it, just drop it”. Overthinking about things that have already happened is not going to change anything.

I conclude with a quote that Lucy relates to when it comes to letting go:

“The longer you hold on, the heavier it gets”
