Currently, we are deep into the season of love, which basically translates to the one time of the year that it is 100-percent socially acceptable to binge-watch all of your favorite rom-coms. You may be thinking that rom-coms are exclusively for people in relationships, but within the genre of romantic comedies, there are several different sub-genres that allow the films to be enjoyed by all. That being said, here are the top recommendations I have based on your relationship status.
Single: John Tucker Must Die
John Tucker Must Die is a 2000’s rom-com classic and personally one of my all-time favs. The film is about a trio of girls who decide to team up with each other after finding out they are all dating the same basketball star, John Tucker. Their plan is to recruit the new girl Kate to get John to fall in love with her so that she can then break his heart. Overall, the antics of their scheme to publicly humiliate John have hilarious effects and make this movie a must-watch!
It’s Complicated: Knocked Up
Knocked Up is another classic rom-com from the 2000s that stars Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl. This film depicts the epitome of an “it’s complicated” relationship, as it involves the two leads forming a relationship with one another after a drunken one-night-stand leads to an unintended pregnancy. While the two may have obvious differences in the beginning, I love how their relationship develops over time.
In a Relationship: The Notebook
Disclaimer: This movie may cause you to cry BIG time. Honestly, I have such a love/hate relationship with this movie due to the emotional rollercoaster that it always gives me. However, I still cannot help but be infatuated by the masterpiece of the plot that is this movie. The Notebook stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as a young couple from the 1940s who fall deeply in love with each other. The details of their love story are told from the present-day perspective of an elderly man from a notebook. If you have not seen this movie yet, make sure you have tissues on deck when you watch it.
Friends with Benefits: 50 First Dates
50 First Dates is a comedic masterpiece that stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. After meeting the local art teacher, Lucy, womanizing marine veterinarian Henry decides to change his ways after he falls for her. However, there is a catch, as Lucy suffers from short-term memory loss and forgets who Henry is a day later. This is not a problem for Henry, as he decides to win her over again each and every new day. This film will always be one of my absolute favorite rom-coms due to the hilarious shenanigans of the characters in the movie.
