How to Celebrate Valentine’s Day if You are in a Long-Distance Relationship

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

Long-distance relationships come with many struggles and challenges. It’s hard feeling lonely when your significant other is miles away and it is only harder to be apart from each other during holidays. But, celebrating Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be sad. There are still many date ideas that you can do together, virtually.

Have a movie night

There are tons of different ways to have a virtual movie night. Netflix, Disney+ and Apple make it possible to watch movies with another person. I recommend making a list of movies or shows you want to watch together, so you always have ideas for when you are apart. Have your significant other on FaceTime so you can eat popcorn and chat while you watch your movie or show.

Order each other dinner

“All you need is love,” Peanuts cartoonist Charles M. Schulz once said. “But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.”

This is probably my favorite idea because it requires some thoughtfulness from each person. You will both pick out the other’s favorite meal and have it sent to them. You can order it via UberEats, GrubHub or DoorDash. Plan to have the meal delivered at the same time so you can both be surprised to discover what the other ordered for you. Then, you can share your meal together on FaceTime and chat.

Send presents and open them together

Gift giving on Valentine’s Day is common, but it can be difficult to do this when you are in a long-distance relationship. To combat the struggle, plan your gift about a month ahead and then send it off later! Gift your partner some of their favorite items when you are together. Then, on Valentine’s Day, open up your gifts together virtually.

Write to each other in the future

Take some time to sit down together over FaceTime and write a letter to your significant other as if you were writing to them three or five years from now. Write about your life and what you are excited about in the future. This is a great way to be more intentional in your relationship and maybe in a few years, you will open up your letter and be pleasantly surprised.

Doing an activity together, such as sending presents or food to each other, will make being long-distance on this special holiday easier. You can still make Valentine’s Day a fun date night if you put in the effort. Spending time together is what really matters.
