A Playlist to Get You Through the Dreaded Holiday of Valentine’s Day

Love sucks and love especially sucks on Valentine’s Day. A day to gush over your lovers and shower them with overpriced chocolate and roses that will die in a week.

Too many who aren’t in any romantic relationship, is a day that isn’t very special. Or to the ones who have had their hearts broken this day can be overwhelming. It becomes just waiting for the day to end so you can buy half-priced candy the next day. But getting through the 14th of February can drag on.

If you aren’t the biggest fan of Valentine’s Day for any reason, below is a playlist of songs that might relate to your feelings towards this day or even love in general. Along with a description of the first five songs on the playlist.

“Somebody Else” The 1975

The 10th track on the band’s second studio album. This song is for the heartbroken anti lovers. Who fell too hard once and never received the same love back. The melancholy lyrics show the watching of others in love while trying to get over someone you once had. That maybe imagining someone else in a place with an old lover helps the process of getting over them easier.

“Violets for Roses” Lana Del Rey

A song off her recent album that came out in 2021. It’s a song about self-love after someone was not able to love you. That you are the only person in your life that will be there from the beginning to the end. That if you keep something around that clouds your world, you might lose things you once found joy in. But once you remove a the dark cloud or “bad lover” you can find those joys once again.

“The Only Heartbreaker” Mitski

A single off the musician’s freshly new album that was released only days ago. It is someone who is the problem in relationships. Someone who screws up love and doesn’t seem to get it right. But with an underlying meaning of still trying and hoping to get it right one day.

“Valentine” Snail Mail

The first track and title of the musician’s album released last year. A song about toxic love. Knowing that a relationship is not healthy but being too selfish to end it. Tearing out pieces of yourself to please someone who isn’t permanent.

“Hurts Me Too” Faye Webster

A jazzy, blues-sounding track off the musician’s second studio album. A post-breakup song. Dwelling in the feeling of loss and heartbreak. That someone you thought was yours was never really yours. Others might say the sadness isn’t good but you find some sort of comfort in it.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a day of happy love. It can be a day of sadness, mourning and hatred towards love. There is a song for any non-romantic place you might be in right now. Even if you are in a neutral or loving place for the holiday, this playlist can still be for you. Music is a way for feelings to be validated and expressed. So take a break, grab some tissues and take a listen.
