Thankful for Our Fellow Her Campus Chapters: Alex From UMICH

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UPR chapter.

I recently had the opportunity to talk to a member of another chapter of Her Campus. We had a casual exchange describing our experiences at HC and got to know a few things about each other. The following are the questions I got to ask her.

  1. What’s your name and where are you from?

My name is Alex DiGennaro and I’m from Binghamton, New York, which is in the upper part of the state!

  1. What’s your major and in what year are you?

I am a current freshman, but my major is undecided while I find courses that resonate with me.

  1. Tell us 3 facts about you.

I love Kesha and Britney Spears, I’ve pet a Koala before (they’re coarse, not soft!) , and I play the French Horn!

  1. What TV shows, books, or musical content are you enjoying currently?

Currently, I am preparing for my Christmas Disney trip by watching all of the Star Wars (movies) for the very first time! I just finished episodes 4 and 5, and started 6. I have also been starting to watch cheesy Christmas movies which are super fun! As for books, I’m reading the Assassin’s Apprentice for the first time, so on the whole I’m catching up on media I’ve never consumed!

  1. What’s your favorite book/movie? Explain.

My favorite movie is Mean Girls. I just love how ridiculous the movie is and I think it’s super fun, (although not the bullying parts). I also love all of the film’s characters. One of my favorite books of all time is The Secret History by Donna Tartt. I just think this book depicts Ancient Greek culture in a very interesting light, and the vibe was very nice as well.

  1. What are your plans after graduating?

After graduating from my Bachelor’s Degree, I plan to attend grad school. That’s all I know so far.

  1. What do you do at Her Campus? (Writer, editor, etc.)

I am a writer for my HC chapter.

  1. What brought you to Her Campus?

I found that I really love writing, and Her Campus seemed a very fun way to develop this interest and find new friends.

  1. How long have you been in the chapter?

I’ve only been on Her Campus for about a month! But I love my school’s chapter.

  1. What did you expect when you joined?

When I first joined I didn’t really know what to expect. All I knew was that I found a community that also loves writing, and that was enough for me!

  1. What’s your favorite thing about being a member at HC?

My favorite thing about HC is its culture of community, and the supportive attitude with which fellow HC members have received me.

  1. Describe your writing style in 3 words.

I think my writing style is a bit forward, descriptive, and imaginative.

  1. What was the title of your first article? What was it about?

My first article will be coming soon! It will actually be your Thanksgiving collab/interview article, which is so exciting!

  1. Do you have any particular goals you want to achieve at HC?

I hope to write more articles and help other people find a love of writing too! I hope to develop and find my voice as a writer, and to become much better than I currently am at this skill.

  1. What type  of articles can we expect from you in the future?

I’d love to be writing articles on books, campus life, holidays, being disabled at college, and interviews narrating other individuals’ underrepresented experiences.

  1. Considering the time you’ve been in the chapter, what advice would you give to someone who wants to join?

I’d say go for it! Even if you have no writing experience like me, you can still join, and I don’t think you can go wrong being in HC! Don’t be afraid to join, don’t be afraid of writing for others and sharing it, and feel free to encourage others who might also seem nervous or hesitant about joining and writing!

Alex and I can agree that all of us can explore inner-creativity at Her Campus. Both of us had little to no experience writing before we joined the organization, and HC welcomed us with open arms. That being said, if you’ve been debating to join, as a very enthusiastic Shia LaBeouf once said: “Just Do It!”

This HC chapter collaboration was a delightful experience to partake in, and more so on this upcoming holiday season. I hope you enjoyed getting to know Alex as much as I did! Don’t forget to stay tuned for her first article as a Her Campus writer!

Thanks to Her Campus I got the chance to meet Alex; considering how big the world is, I don’t think it could have happened otherwise. I’m also thankful to Alex, for giving me some of her time to do this. It doesn’t matter if we’re thousands of miles away from each other, and behind a screen, there’s still a chance to connect with people and make the most of bonding experiences such as this one.

Alejandra Negrón Rodríguez is a writer and Events Director at Her Campus at UPR. She manages all chapter events, prioritizing in coordinating and organizing for a range of successful and fun activities. She mostly writes culture and entertainment articles, but as an avid reader, her favorite one’s are book reviews. She is a senior at the University of Puerto Rico, majoring in Political Science with a minor in French. At Her Campus, writing became a muse for her, because she can transform her interests into works for others to enjoy. When she’s not writing, Alejandra reads books or buys them (ask her overwhelming mountain of unread books). Alejandra also loves learning new languages, crocheting, and spending time with her friends.
