Home For The Holidays: A Guide For Introverts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSD chapter.

The holiday season is great for spending time with friends and family but if you’re anything like me, then socializing with others isn’t always ideal. Here are some tips from a fellow introvert with social anxiety that will help you get through this holiday season:

1: Try Your Best

Although it may be a bit intimidating, it’s always best to try to catch up with loved ones. Attempting to do so will not only help overcome some fears but will also signal to your family and friends that you are trying. The next time your loved ones meet over the holiday break, don’t pass on the invitation to hang out because you may surprise yourself and find that it wasn’t as nerve-racking as you had anticipated.

2: Know Your Limit

With that being said, don’t be afraid to set boundaries. It’s always important to take some time for yourself in order to recharge. If you find yourself feeling a bit overwhelmed, maybe schedule some alone time. Going for an evening walk around town is always a great way to help your mind and body reset.

3: Let Others Know It Isn’t Personal

If you’re someone who is fairly introverted it’s likely that your loved ones have noticed your reserved behaviors. However, they might not know that it’s because you’re an introvert. It’s possible that they may think you’re upset or that you’re pulling away from the relationship. A great way to address this issue is to be honest. Communicate how you’re feeling in an effective manner. Reassure them that your desire to be alone is nothing more than a personality trait and that it has nothing to do with them personally.

The holiday season is both cheerful and challenging for introverts. While many would like to spend time with loved ones, it’s often easier said than done. Hopefully, these tips will help you manage your social life in a way that you feel most comfortable. Here’s to a happy holiday season, regardless of how you decide to spend it!
