The Do’s and Don’ts of Brushing Your Hair

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Temple chapter.

Yes, you read that title right. Since when did being a girl get so complex? I’ve been hearing a lot of different things about hair brushing recently. I decided to take it upon myself to do my own research after feeling like I brush my hair too often. I struggle with thin hair that always seems to have loose strands falling out. With these new tips, maybe you and I can see some improvement in the health of our hair. It’s beauty secrets like these that you never really think about, but are really such a game changer.

It’s great to brush your hair not only to get tangles out, but for hair health and shine, scalp simulation, and loose hair removal. In an older study, brushing hair and hair loss was examined during a 4-week period. After the 4 weeks, researchers found that hair loss was reduced by brushing less frequently. Basically, brushing your hair more is associated with more hair loss. With that said, it’s recommended that you brush your hair only twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. It’s key that you gently brush your hair as well to distribute natural oils as compared to vigorously brushing your hair, which will only cause breakage and damage your hair.

Brushing wet hair is a serious game. There’s a lot of rules to this! The type of brush you use and how you brush your hair are both important factors in keeping your hair healthy. Your hair is in an extremely fragile state when it’s wet. Use a wide-tooth comb or a Wet Brush when brushing wet hair. Use the comb or brush on the ends of your hair and comb down to remove tangles. Don’t force it on your hair. Small strokes when brushing is the best. A detangler might be helpful. Once the tangles are removed on the bottom of your hair, move up a few inches and start combing down again. Brushing your hair when it’s wet adds a lot of stress to strands that would otherwise flow straight through your brush. It’s recommended you brush your hair post-shower after it air-drys. When it comes to brushing dry hair, brush it in sections and don’t start at your roots. Doing so could cause breakage.

Hair care is super important to me because I’m currently on the journey to healthier hair. It feels like a crime now to brush my hair more than twice a day with this information, and I definitely won’t be doing that anymore when my hair is wet. Don’t forget to treat your hair right, it needs proper love and care to be the healthiest it can be!

Hi! My name is Madeline, I'm a sophomore and I'm a Media Studies and Production Major. I'm from South Jersey and I spent most of the summer down the shore. I am either in complete beach mode or complete city mode. I see myself living in the city at one point of my life and would also love to have a beach house of my own when I’m older. My surroundings and atmosphere that I’m in really reflect my mood and day to day life. I love to hangout with friends, read, do yoga, and I just recently learned how to surf and got into running! :)
