How To: Avoiding the Winter Blues

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Dalhousie chapter.

As the days grow shorter and the cold air creeps in, the idea that winter is around the corner might not put the biggest smile on your face. If things seem dull, here are some tips to keep you feeling your best during this cold winter season.

1.A magical movie night

A blizzard howls outside while you and your friends lay on the couch drowning in a sea of blankets. The only light is a couple of candles set on the coffee table, spreading the sweet scent of peppermint and pine throughout your apartment. You sip on a warm hot chocolate as a movie runs. Sounds pretty magical, right? And the fact that there’s a blizzard outside makes it even more special.

2. Perfecting a new recipe

You may have to run to the grocery store to prepare for this one, but if you have the time, why not make that cauliflower soup you’ve been dying to try? You don’t need to be a master chef in order to have a successful cooking night. As long as you feel relaxed and learn something new – it’s a success. And you might even get a delicious treat out of it!

3. Bask in the coffee shop vibes

It’s time to zip up your puffiest puffer and mosey on over to your local coffee shop. I don’t know if it’s the rustic furniture, the sweet tunes or that barista who always remembers your order, but studying at a coffee shop never gets old. Or perhaps you’ve been studying elsewhere all day and you simply need a break. Either way, there’s no denying that winter is the season for coffee. So next time you have a paper due or just need a place to unwind after a long day, head on over to your go-to coffee shop.

4. Brush up on some winter reads

There’s no better time to cross some books off your reading list than a snow day. You wake up to see a glistening layer of fresh snow coating everything. What’s next? Cozying up on your sofa with a cup of tea and cracking open your favourite winter read. If it’s a good day, maybe you’ll finish the entire book in one sitting. Or if it’s a really good day, maybe you’ll get through two.

5. Indoor workouts

Maybe it’s the bitter air or the long walk to the gym, but the cold weather can sometimes be discouraging when it comes to staying active. Lucky for you, there are ways to workout from home. From yoga classes to HIIT workouts and even pilates, there are endless ways to work up a sweat from the comfort of your home. It’s all about finding a workout routine that works for you.

6. Try something new!

If you’re confined to the indoors this winter, you might as well take up something new. Maybe you want to learn a new language or pick up a new instrument. Regardless of what it is, you should go for it! Just like reading or cooking, there’s so much you can explore in the solitude of your own home – and winter is the perfect time for it.
