Gone are the days of mini skirts and crop tops, of late summer nights and warm days by the beach. As the chilly season approaches us, it is time to dust off our jackets and polish our boots. There is no denying the number of new trends that emerged during the summer months. The same can be said for winter. From bold prints and textures to the massive comeback of vintage pieces, these trends are taking off with a buzz. While many of us will rewear our old clothes, here are some amazing new pieces to add to your closet to elevate your winter style to the next level.

Anything Leather

You can’t spell 2021 without spelling leather. The material has been heavily incorporated into different garments this year. The most popular ones will have to be pants and jackets. It is almost impossible to go outside without spotting someone in the Aritzia Melina Pant or a gorgeous leather blazer. Leather sets are also very popular nowadays. Whether you’re hitting the town on a night out or going to the office on a Monday morning, a good leather piece will keep you looking stylish and feeling comfortable. Not only is the fabric such a beautiful sight to see, but it is also very thick and heavy-duty, shielding you from the harsh cold weather.

Fur trimmed 2000’s Inspired Coats

If there is one trend everyone has decided to embrace this year, it is the infamous Y2K aesthetic. The warmer seasons saw an influx of hot pink sweatsuits and low-rise jeans. You might be wondering what this seemingly timeless aesthetic will bring to the table during the winter season. Well, fur-trimmed jackets are making a comeback. These jackets are flamboyant, fashionable and fabulous. Plus, they will keep you warm all winter long. This one from Ted Baker has a faux fur collar and cuffs with a belt to accentuate your figure. A more affordable trench coat with a faux fur collar from Nasty Gal comes in both brown and black.

Dark Denim Jeans

The days of acid-wash and patchwork jeans are gone. In its place are a more daring and raw style colour. Honestly speaking, dark denim for colder weather makes a lot of sense. The colour palette is gorgeous against the hues of white and grey that the season provides us, and the raw fabric tends to be thicker and harder to break in. Given the current conversation around the relevance of skinny jeans, it seems like most dark denim pants take on a more loose, straight-fit silhouette. Brands like Levi’s, Mango and H&M have a great selection of styles to choose from. Since denim is a timeless fabric that outlives certain trends, purchasing these can be a great investment for your wardrobe!

Letterman/Varsity Jackets

We can’t talk about fall/winter fashion without talking about the influence of preppy, academia-inspired style. With pieces like blazers and patterns like plaid being all the rage, let’s give some love to the classic letterman jacket. Brands like H&M and Urban Outfitters just get it. You can spot people wearing these vintage-inspired varsity jackets in an obvious oversized fashion. Pair it with a hoodie and a nice pair of trousers, and you’ll have mastered the collegiate style that everyone wants.

Slouchy Shoulder Bags

As the world gets back into the rush of things, most of us want to take things slow. Our outfits reflect this mindset, incorporating “lazy” pieces into our everyday style. The same can be said for the bags we carry. The accessory is not only a beautiful addition to any dull outfit, it also has functionality. This winter, ditch the tiny structured handbags and opt for a slouchy shoulder bag. They are great for your every schedule you might have on your planner: Work, dinner, dates or travels. These bags are comfortable to carry despite their haphazard shape. They come in different sizes, creating a wide variety for you to choose from. Whether it is this spacious tote from Anthropologie or this JW PEI dream that every TikTok girl owns, the slouchy shoulder bag is here to stay for several months.

Countless fashion trends are emerging nowadays. The ones we have mentioned are all quite universal as anyone can wear them anywhere and anytime. With these trends, you don’t have to sacrifice fashion to be warm and cozy. If you are spicing up your wardrobe this winter, which ones are you wearing and which ones are you tossing?
