When starting this semester, I was well aware that two of my roommates were in a sorority, but it wasn’t until my third roommate started considering going through sorority recruitment that I became well aware of the fact that I was the only person in my entire suite who was not in a sorority.
I’d like to start this by saying that I, like many people, have had a very stereotypical understanding of what it means to be in a sorority. I imagined that a lot of the girls had similar looks and personalities, and that mixers/parties were a priority. So while I knew that being in a sorority wasn’t for me, I was almost worried about what it meant to have three roommates who were in sororities because I had grouped them to be all like-minded people, and didn’t think that my personality wouldn’t match. Boy, was I wrong.
I don’t particularly enjoy being wrong, but this is one of the instances in which I will gladly accept it. My roommates, all of them, have turned out to be some of the best girls I know. They’re all genuine people who just happen to be in a sorority. Sure, there are times where I joke about them having to go do sorority stuff, or what it means to be in a sorority, but I truly think it does mean something when I say all of my closest friends (so far) since coming to UMass have all been members of a sorority. I couldn’t imagine living with anyone else.
I’m sure it varies from sorority to sorority, but I admire the importance of philanthropy that my friends have expressed and the joy they have to have a group of girls that they can call sisters for the rest of their lives. I love how much they care about what it means to be a member of a sorority and how incredible their personalities are as individuals. They’re some of the kindest, funniest, and most caring people, and I couldn’t imagine a better combination of people.
So yeah, while being in a sorority isn’t for me, and I don’t think it ever will be, living with three sorority girls is something that I will never regret.
