Small Businesses You Can Support in Kansas City this Holiday Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UMKC chapter.

With the holiday season quickly approaching, let’s talk about small businesses in Kansas City that you can support. There are several businesses like Kindred and Shop Local KC that sell products from numerous small businesses throughout the city. These are great opportunities to explore and discover new products and shops while simultaneously supporting multiple small businesses.

If you are looking for clothing for people of any gender, size and age, Culture Thread has designs for shirts, sweatshirts, pants, hats, socks, bags and onesies. Their designs are representative of Kansas City and include an Arrowhead Collection. This Black-owned business is one to support, with unique designs that fit every style.

Other clothing shops to support include Blended Boutique, New Sense of Style and The Pink Trunk. These three boutiques include clothing, jewelry and accessories primarily for women and curate a lot of different styles. Blended Boutique is a primarily online boutique with various pop-up shops on the Plaza and Overland Park. They sell women’s clothing, jewelry and accessories and are less than a year old so be sure to check them out!

New Sense of Style is available online and in the form of showroom shopping downtown KC. This Black-owned business has a wide range of clothing for women including everything from bikinis, sandals, clothing and professional wear. They have a really amazing campaign with the intention to showcase and emphasize successful women in various fields. Their unique services include Style & Shop Sessions, Dress for Success: Corporate Styling, Virtual Mix and Match Workshop, personal styling services and closet/wardrobe make-over.

The Pink Trunk is a Black-owned business that has reasonably priced trendy clothing, accessories and jewelry for women. Their products make great gifts for the people in your life since they include different styles. The Pink Trunk has a lookbook on their website, which is very aesthetically pleasing and provides style inspiration for their products.

If you are looking for jewelry for your loved ones this holiday season, Nickel & Suede and Soul Rebel Jewelry are small businesses in Kansas City with numerous styles. These two shops have different price ranges and styles that cater to a wide range of the community, making these pieces perfect for gifting. Nickel & Suede has locations in Liberty, MO and The Plaza and Soul Rebel Jewelry is online.

Additional small businesses include Zoom, which is a toy store that has so many cool and unique items for any age and is located on the Plaza and they also have a Facebook page. KC Urban Potters is a small business from six local potters who create and sell functional pieces as well as more artistic pieces that look beautiful in a home. Mash Handmade is a whimsical shop run by a mother and daughter duo that specializes in handmade items for a home but also includes art, jewelry, children’s toys and clothing.

We can’t forget to include sweet holiday gifts for the furry friend in your life, and Tail Waggin’ PetStop has you covered! Aside from selling just about anything a dog or cat could ever dream about, there is also a DIY bathing station designed to make the process much easier than washing your pet at home. Tail Waggin’ PetStop focuses on the whole experience for your animal and has a shop dog, Rusty, to welcome your furry friends.

Make the effort to shop small this holiday season and support local businesses. Your contribution is helping them stay in business and they provide products more unique than chain companies. Support the Kansas City community through these stores that value and appreciate this city and its people.
