I think we can all agree that receiving a card is one of the most special feelings. And even though writing and mailing a card can feel like a lot of effort, especially when you’re juggling a full course load, remember that feeling next time you want to send a text instead. Take it from three of our Her Campus community members, Jordan, Dez, and Carli, on why sending and receiving cards is an important part of their lives.
Her Campus: Tell us a little more about why you send cards.
Dez: I send cards because they are thoughtful. It’s such a small gesture that can make anyone feel better. Words can be so powerful and when it’s on something physical, it can just mean so much more!
Jordan: I love to send cards because I feel there isn’t a better feeling than to know someone you love and care about is thinking about you. Someone could be having a horrible week, imagine checking your mailbox and seeing a card from a loved one, telling you they love and miss you and hope you’re okay.
Carli: I love sending cards because it shows that you care and put in the extra effort beyond just a text message. Personally, when I receive a nice handwritten note it is something I’ll save forever. I love finding pretty cards to pick up and surprise my friends and hopefully they get the same feeling I do when I receive a card.
Her Campus: Do you have a favorite memory that involves cards?
Carli: My earliest memories of sending cards were when I was young and would write letters to my family in California. Today, I still love the excitement of receiving an unexpected card in the mail! This past year I have relied on sending cards more than ever. Whether it’s for missed birthdays, post-breakup encouragement, or just because, I made an extra effort to send cards to stay in touch with friends when we couldn’t physically be together. I mailed out handwritten cards for Christmas to my friends from college this past year when we couldn’t celebrate together.
Jordan: When my mother moved me into college for my freshman year, before she left she gave me a card and in the card, she was wishing me good luck on my freshman year of college and just left me some very encouraging words. I kept the card and anytime I was having a bad day, I would go back and read it to feel better. Ever since then, it has been a tradition for her to give me a card every school year.
Dez: My favorite memory from a card I received was from my 11th birthday. My brother had just gone away to college and I was super sad so he and his girlfriend sent over the cutest cupcake-shaped card with two handwritten notes from both of them. I still read the card to this day because it means so much to me! Another favorite memory is for every occasion/holiday my boyfriend and I give each other cards with notes in them. It’s our way of sending little love letters to each other.
