How to Turn Your Favorite Hobby into the Perfect Christmas Gift

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

The end of the semester (and a much-needed Winter break!) are fast approaching. Hopefully you will have some time to kick back, relax, and enjoy the beauty of the season. I love everything about Thanksgiving and Christmas time: the food, the smells, the cozy sweaters, and so many other things. I also love using this time to make homemade gifts for the special people in my life for the upcoming holidays. Below I have listed some ways that your hobbies can translate into a wonderful present for a loved one.

Photography

Who wouldn’t love getting a framed picture of a cherished moment in their life? I know I would! Recently I used Shutterfly to make a desk plaque featuring several of my family members. It always makes me so happy when I’m stressed out or bored with schoolwork to look over and see some of my favorite people smiling up at me.

Art

This one may seem obvious, but if you love making art, that could make a great present no matter what your favorite medium is. You have tons of amazing options: painting, drawing, making a collage, creating a sculpture, and whatever else you can think of!

Knitting or crocheting

What better way to show love to people than by gifting them items that will keep them warm and protected through the chilly winter months? A nice, soft sweater, scarf, hat, or any number of knitted or crocheted creations make the perfect gift because they’re both comforting and practical!

Card making

I’m not sure that a card technically qualifies as a gift, but handmade cards are my personal favorite way to bring a smile to someone’s face. I love creating special, personalized cards that people can enjoy for years to come.

baking or cooking

Here’s why food is a great gift: it is (1) delicious and can be enjoyed by all, and (2) you don’t have to find room for yet another item in your living space. If you want a gift that keeps on giving, you can even share the recipe along with whatever you make.

reading

Did you just finish a book that you think someone you know would absolutely love? Why not gift them a copy? Sharing book recommendations can give you someone to endlessly discuss your greatest reads with, and it may help the recipient to find their next favorite novel. Plus, you can write a personalized message in the cover to make the present extra special!

music

If you like writing songs, singing, or playing music on an instrument, consider sharing the gift of music! You could play or sing something for a loved one or write an entire song that is made just for them. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t want a song that was written for and dedicated to them from someone they care about?

an experience

Making something isn’t the only way to turn your hobby into a gift for someone else! You could also share your time with them. Teach them to do something that you love, or simply enjoy the activity with them! To go along with the last item on the list, if you’re the best baker in your friend group, offer to help someone make the perfect chocolate chip cookies! If you’re an amazing ice skater or dancer, offer to give a friend lessons! Are you a makeup aficionado? Help them to do their makeup for that glamorous holiday party they’re attending!

There are so many ways to share your love of an activity with the people you love- you just need to get a little creative with it! Happy gifting!

Autumn
