It’s not a secret that the world of anime is very male-dominated. It can also be quite challenging to find one you enjoy that doesn’t over-sexualize women, especially if you’re new to the genre. I’ve been an avid anime watcher since I was a kid, and have come across some fantastic anime with strong female protagonists. In this article, I’ll be sharing some amazing anime with some well-written female protagonists!
Mikasa Ackermann (AOT)
At the top of the list reigns Mikasa Ackermann from Attack on Titan, also known as Shingeki no Kyojin in Japan! One thing I found (and continue to find) fascinating about Mikasa is that she’s her own independent self. Typically in anime, I always find female protagonists depend on male protagonists to save them from whatever trouble they’re in. But that’s not the case with Mikasa. She’s a whole badass. Even though it does seem she has feelings for the main male protagonist, she’s never the stereotypical “damsel in distress.” She’s always the one to protect her family and friends from harm, and that’s something I love about her! The first season of Attack on Titan can be found on Netflix!
Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon)
Next up is Usagi Tsukino from the very popular anime Sailor Moon! This anime (and manga!) is one of my favourite childhood animes! I had to include Usagi on this list because she’s pretty down-to-earth. Not only do I relate to her on every level imaginable (being a crybaby, always hungry, etc.), her character is also so well-written! She always sees the good in everything and strives to work hard. She’s also saved the hero (even though he’s the one that is supposed to be protecting her!)
Chihiro (Spirited Away)
Chihiro from the classic Studio Ghibli film, Spirited Away, is another favourite of mine! I’ve analyzed this movie so many times, and every time I notice how creatively written her character is. In the beginning, you see how dependent Chihiro is. However, as the movie progresses, her personality and a stronger sense of self develop within her. Check it out on Netflix if you get the chance!
Nobara (Jujutsu Kaisen)
Jujutsu Kaisen is an anime I’ve recently watched, and all I can say is, “Damn! The mangaka (AKA the writer of the manga) knows how to write strong female characters!” My case in point is Nobara, one of the main protagonists from Jujutsu Kaisen. Her strong personality, motives, and goals allow her to shine in a unique way without the help of the two other male protagonists. And that is something I will continue to love about her!
Haruhi (Ouran High School Host Club)
Last on the list is Haruhi from the popular romance anime, Ouran High School Host Club. This anime is quite old. Typically, during the early 2000s, one of the main characteristics of romance anime was that the heroine was always “boy crazy”. But Haruhi is different. Throughout the show, you can see her motivations, interests, and independence shine despite only having male friends that are interested in her.
If you’re looking to start a new anime or just anime in general, I highly suggest the ones above! Not only are the stories amazing, but you’ll also come to fall in love with the way the characters are written!
