I think it’s safe to say that my favorite season is fall. And that’s saying something because I’ve lived in Hawai’i my entire life and it’s practically always summer here (with the exception of about a month’s worth of rain throughout the entire year). I love the idea of seeing the leaves on trees change color, snow that falls as early as October, and wearing cute layered clothing outside in the cold. Now, that would be my ultimate manifestation of what fall (or autumn) is all about.
Another thing that fall has that other seasons don’t quite match up to, besides the fact that Thanksgiving and the holidays are right around the corner, is the galore of movies that are set during this season.
Fall, to me, is everything that is encompassed into these movies, rom-coms, magic, love, heartfelt morals, and a few dysfunctional family dramas that spice up the soon-to-be end of the year. A mix of some great classics and new movies, whether you’re watching alone or with family, these movies are perfect for all ages.
And with midterms coming and going, the weather getting cooler, and with longer nights to spend, this is one of the best ways to kick off this fall season. Add these movies to your movie queue and cuddle up with a fluffy blanket and movie snacks because you’re in for a sweet treat.
1. Good Will Hunting
Starting with a classic, this movie is literally a perfect segway into Fall. The Fall vibes are here and it’s a great story that you have to watch till the end!
2. Halloween Town
Switching things up, this movie was always on the top of my list to watch in October. Old Disney channel movies that you would watch after school and/or during fall break were the best. And I don’t know if this is an understatement but I also have to watch the entire series of Halloween Town films (HalloweenTown II: Kalabar’s Revenge, HalloweenTown High, and Return to HalloweenTown). It’s a must!
3. Sleepless in Seattle
Now, this movie is a rom-com set in the cold and fuzzy city of Seattle. A story about accidents, destiny, and love. I can already see myself wrapped up in my blankets and drinking a pumpkin spice latte made from home while watching this unforgettable movie!
4. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
If you haven’t read the book, I highly recommend it and to also watch this movie. Lara Jean Covey’s cute outfits and fake-dating scheme just screams fall to me and yet another reason as to why rom-coms are my fall guilty pleasure.
5. A Cinderella Story
At first glance, people might forget that this movie takes place during fall. With the Halloween dance, college brochures, and football games, this is one for the books (and probably my all-time favorite movie). Princetongirl and Nomad have my heart in this film and a cozy fall movie night with my name on it!
6. The Outsiders
In this coming-of-age movie, though it’s not discretely set in the fall, it’s one that’ll leave you feeling thankful for family and in awe for Ponyboy and his brothers. “Stay golden, Ponyboy.”
7. You’ve Got Mail
Yet another Tom Hanks movie, yes, but this movie had to be one of the first rom-coms that jump started my (ongoing) hopeless romantic phase. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, the two that made online dating (and possible catfishing) what it is today. This movie gives me the feels and heartwarming vibes!
8. Knives Out
This movie is definitely a change of pace from my rom-com and childhood favorites. I saw this movie around this time last year and loved it. A dysfunctional family with a mystery at their hands, just a fun way to place bets on a “Who done it?” kind of movie.
9. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
You might not have expected this movie to be on this list, but what is fall without a bit of magic. I love the Harry Potter series and this first movie radiates fall vibes. With Harry’s (again) dysfunctional family, Hogwarts, and the holidays, it’s definitely one to add to the list!
10. Matilda
Continuing on with fall magic, this movie is always a fun rewatch during this time of year. Matilda, her family, Ms. Honey, and chocolate cake are the highlights of this one and I can’t wait to watch it again!
11. Coco
This is yet another great movie to kick-off the fall season with family! A heartwarming story about family, dia de los muertos, and music. Also, the aesthetic and color hues in this movie is *chef’s kiss.*
12. Little Women (2019)
A movie based on the coming-of-age novel written in 1868, tells the story of four sisters navigating through hardship, love, money, and most importantly being women in the 1800s. It’s a great movie filled with amazing actors that has me awing by them every time I watch it!
13. Flipped
This movie is based on a really sweet novel by Wendelin Van Draanen, a cute he-said she-said story. Though, I’m sure this movie isn’t set in fall, it’s a must see classic movie about young crushes and first loves (and another one of my favorite movies).
14. When Harry Met Sally
And last but not least, I had to save this movie for last (and for dramatic reasons)… When Harry Met Sally! This movie is of course a classic and one that I’m sure all hopeless romantics have watched. A perfect rom-com to cuddle up with and spend the night contemplating on the question: “Can a man and a woman really be just friends?”
