Kim Kardashian on “SNL”: Surprisingly Good or the Bare Minimum?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at U Conn chapter.

On October 9, 2021, Kim Kardashian hosted the second episode of the forty-seventh season of Saturday Night Live. The Kardashian-Jenner clan has been parodied in various skits by SNL cast members for years. However, last weekend marked the first time a Kardashian hosted the show. Kris Jenner and Khloe Kardashian made guest appearances as well.

Kim began her time on the show with a well-written monologue poking fun at herself and her family. She started with a joke about the infamous sex tape that launched her to stardom, saying, “When they asked, I was like ‘You want me to host? Why? I haven’t had a movie premiere in a really long time.'”

Kim continued, making jabs at her mom, her father’s involvement in the O.J. Simpson trial (which garnered mixed reactions), Kanye’s so-called presidential campaign, and SNL’s falling viewership. She delivered the lines with humor and decent comedic timing.

The Kardashian roast fest continued in several other skits. One notable skit called “People’s Kourt” featured Kim portraying her sister Kourtney as a judge. Kim mastered Kourtney’s signature dead-pan voice and could-care-less attitude. The most notable part of the skit was when Kim poked fun at Kourtney’s new friendship with Megan Fox, who’s boyfriend Machine Gun Kelly bears a striking resemblance to Kourtney’s boyfriend Travis Barker. The couples’ habits also resemble one another, both posting lots of PDA and wearing lots of black and leather.

Other popular skits, racking up two to three million views on SNL’s Youtube account, included Pete Davidson kissing Kim as Aladdin and Jasmine. There was also a Bachelorette parody featuring Tyler Cameron, John Cena, Jesse Williams, and more.

Overall, Kim Kardashian’s SNL episode went better than expected. Having her host was a smart and strategic decision to re-garner interest in the show. However, long-time fans will note that Kim’s performance was just the bare minimum. It seemed better than it was because of Kim’s reputation as not being a good performer. The episode did not feature any laugh-out-loud moments; arguably, the funniest point was Pete Davidson’s portrayal of his friend MGK. It also would have been interesting for Kim to make an effort to counter the stereotypes surrounding her instead of feeding into them.

But, at the end of the day, the episode was extremely entertaining and served its purpose.
