The Best Netflix Originals You Should Watch This Fall

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McMaster chapter.

Whenever the weather starts getting cooler, I find myself watching a whole lot more tv. Something about fall just makes me want to sit in with a latte, binge watching as many shows as I can. Since I’ve been excited for fall since the end of August, I’ve watched pretty much every show Netflix has recommended to me so far. So, I feel pretty qualified to recommend the best Netflix originals for you to watch this fall. Some of these are even a little spooky to help you get in the mood for the end of October!

The oa

I’m starting with this one because while it’s my personal favourite on the list, it is also by far the weirdest. The OA follows a girl named Prairie who has just shown up after having been missing for years, and won’t say where she was. The show focuses on topics like alternate realities, near death experiences, and chosen families. If that isn’t enough, it has some pretty strange dance breaks sprinkled throughout. It’s all worth it in the end though, because once you get past the weird, The OA is a beautifully made show about the human condition. Sadly, it was cancelled after its second season, but creators have plans to continue the story by any means necessary!

CLickbait

Clickbait is about a man who goes missing when a video shows up, claiming that the perpetrators will kill him at 5 million views. The mystery of the show is less about what happens, and more about who is responsible, and if we can even trust the victims of this crime. Each episode focuses on one character and with only 8 episodes it’s a quick and exciting watch. I promise, no matter how much you try, you won’t be able to predict the ending and you won’t be able to look away. The acting is fantastic, and the characters are really well developed. Once you watch this, you’ll be wondering what really goes on behind closed doors for everyone you meet.

Midnight Mass

This is another weird one, created by the same man who created The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor, so you know you can expect some horror. Midnight Mass is about an isolated town full of avid church goers. When a new priest arrives and inexplicable miracles begin to happen, residents become more devoted than ever, but what are they devoting themselves to? This show is extremely unsettling, if not actually scary. And if you have been or still are religious, it will make an even bigger impact.

Money Heist

Frankly, if you haven’t watched Money Heist yet you must have been living under a rock. This Spanish show is wildly entertaining, and full of action. It follows a group of criminals who decide to rob the Royal Mint of Spain under the guidance of The Professor, a criminal mastermind. This show isn’t very recent but they just released the first part of their final season, and I can’t wait to see how it closes out. With characters who are deeply flawed but loveable, and all named after cities, you’ll wish you were a part of this odd group of friends.

Squid Game

Squid Game is a must watch, no questions asked. It’s a Korean drama about hundreds of people stricken by poverty who agree to join a game for a chance to win a huge cash prize. After being drugged they wake up to be told that they must win a series of children’s games or be eliminated. The problem is that elimination doesn’t just mean being sent home, but being killed. This dystopian thriller is a gory commentary on how our capitalist society can and has gone awry. Squid Game has a ton of twists, characters you really root for, and themes that will turn your stomach at the thought of what our world could come to. Make sure you watch this one in its original Korean because the dubbed version just isn’t as good.

That should be enough TV to keep you occupied until the end of the year but if you’re anything like me, it’ll last you a month tops. Here’s hoping Netflix keeps pumping out new seasons and new shows to keep us busy through the cold months that are coming!
