Movie Night Themes You (and Your Friends) Will Love!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wake Forest chapter.

My roommate and I keep adding movies to our to-be-watched list, but we never seem to have the time to sit down and actually watch them! Sometimes you need a little motivation to get a few friends together for a relaxing movie night, so I’ve put together a few themed ideas for movie nights and some examples of movies to fit the theme! Enjoy!

Tragic Romance Movie Night

Grab some popcorn and a box of tissues for this first one! Everyone deserves good movie-induced cries sometimes, so if doomed love stories are your thing, here’s a list of films where the love interests do not end up together:

  • Titanic (1997)
  • La La Land (2016)
  • A Star is Born (2018)
  • The Fault in Our Stars (2014)
  • Call me by your Name (2017)
  • Atonement (2007)
  • The Best of Me (2014)
  • Five Feet Apart (2019)
  • A Walk to Remember (2002)

Horror Movie Night

Whether you love or hate scary movies, this is the night to hold onto your friends for dear life and not freak out when the pizza delivery person rings your doorbell! If you want a little thrill or to scare your friends, here are some of my favorite horror movies:

  • Get Out (2017)
  • Us (2019)
  • A Quiet Place (2018)
  • The Invisible Man (2020)
  • Hereditary (2018)
  • The Conjuring (2013)
  • Split (2016)

Superhero Movie Night

As a huge Marvel fan, it’s my ultimate goal to get all my friends to wear something to represent their favorite superhero and have a movie marathon! I’m thinking chips and dip and other snack foods for dinner, maybe an ice cream sundae for dessert, and a side of saving the world!

  • Iron Man trilogy
  • Thor trilogy
  • Captain America trilogy
  • Avengers quartet
  • The Dark Knight trilogy
  • Black Widow (2021)
  • Wonder Woman (2017)
  • Spider-Man (2002) with Tobey Maguire
  • The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) with Andrew Garfield
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) with Tom Holland

Oscar-Winning Movie Night

The Oscars are held in very high regard, elegant and regal. For this theme, I imagine breaking out the fancy drinks and ordering a delivered pasta dinner. Treat yourself and your friends to some quality entertainment and food for this movie night!

  • Nomadland (2020)
  • Parasite (2019)
  • Green Book (2018)
  • The Shape of Water (2017)
  • Moonlight (2016)
  • Spotlight (2015)
  • Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
  • 12 Years a Slave (2013)
  • Argo (2012)
  • The Artist (2011)
  • The King’s Speech (2010)

Indie Film Movie Night

I think this theme could be super fun if your group of friends wanted to make a home-cooked meal or bake together as well! Get comfortable and get ready for some funny yet thoughtful movies with this list:

  • The Breakfast Club (1985)
  • Lady Bird (2017)
  • Whiplash (2014)
  • The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)
  • 500 Days of Summer (2009)
  • Brokeback Mountain (2005)
  • The Farewell (2019)

Girl’s Movie Night

Girl’s nights were made for laughter and face masks. Enjoy any of these movies with a fun and relaxing spa night with the girls!

  • Legally Blonde (2001)
  • Mean Girls (2004)
  • 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
  • Clueless (1995)
  • She’s The Man (2006)
  • How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
  • A Cinderella Story (2004)
  • Mamma Mia! (2008)
  • Pitch Perfect (2012)
  • Bride Wars (2009)
