Finding time as a college student to watch shows can be hard. I rarely have time to sit down and truly invest in a show, but I’ve found that a few minutes here and there are usually worth it.

Since coming to college, I have felt distant from my family. However, watching the shows they watch and being able to chat with them about it afterward has made time at school a lot more enjoyable.

“Only murders in the building”

Calling all true crime lovers, this show is for you. Starring comedy icons, Martin Short and Steve Martin, and everyone’s favorite former wizard, Selena Gomez, “Only Murders in the Building” is a comedy-mystery show that will pull you in and never let you go. With new episodes every Tuesday, this Hulu original goes back to TV roots and stops you from binge-watching and solving this who-dun-it. However, this past week, the final episode was released so if you’re due for a new binge, this is the one.

The new series has already received rave reviews with the Rolling Stone calling it “one of this year’s greatest TV delights,” and The New Yorker calling it a “ten-episode charmer.” These critics definitely hit it on the nose. The cast explores the light-hearted, comical side of all of the baggage that comes with a crime, but never shy away from showing the dark side as well. Something I tend to enjoy most about these types of shows is how the character’s stories are weaved into the storyline, so viewers can analyze how these crimes truly affect the main characters.

And as Steve Martin tweeted on October 12, “On this day in history, ‘Only Murders in the Building’ is now BINGE-ABLE.”

“Brooklyn nine-nine”

If you love sitcoms as much as I do, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” is a must-watch. The final season just ended after being a household favorite since 2013. Fans of the show loved it so much that when FOX canceled it after only five seasons, they started a social media campaign for more seasons. The campaign was a success as it was picked up by NBC for another three seasons.

And to all of the “Parks and Recreation” fans out there, this is exactly the next show for you. With a “Saturday Night Live” alum lead role, a great diverse cast, heartwarming stories, and a grand finale to end it, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” hits all of the spots you want a show to hit when watching it. “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” will keep you laughing because each season brings something new and exciting to the table and it’s always something to look forward to.

All seasons are now streaming on Peacock or Hulu.

“Sex Education”

Season three of “Sex Education” just came out on Netflix and it is worth all of the hype. Immediately after its release, fans took to Twitter where it instantly began trending, showing a high viewer dedication to the show.

The series is set in the countryside of the United Kingdom, but it never truly feels like it, besides, of course, the accents. It is meant to walk on a thin line of feeling like a U.S. and a UK high school, therefore appealing to viewers everywhere. Also, the whole show has a nostalgic feeling because everything from the clothes to the sets makes it feel like an 80’s throwback.

I think what makes this show truly stand out is the intricate characters and their even more intricate storylines. Each one feels different and separate from the other, letting you see the different types of families and people out there, and how they all come together. The diversity in the cast makes each and every watcher feel welcome and accepted.

But we can’t talk about “Sex Education” without talking about the sex part. Every episode touches on a different topic of sex and doesn’t hold back when doing so. While watching the show, it feels like you are getting an education that you never learned in school. One that isn’t about abstinence, but one about loving yourself and understanding others. There is so much more covered in the show, but I will leave it to the show to surprise you at every corner as you slowly fall in love (hopefully).

“Sex Education’s” season three is now streaming on Netflix.

“Ted Lasso”

“Ted Lasso,” the fun, sports-centered comedy show just won seven Emmys, including Outstanding Comedy Series. Additionally, Jason Sudekis, who plays THE Ted Lasso, won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, as he should. Sudekis is so good at what he does, that he is already set to be earning $1 million per episode in the third season.

This comedy follows an American football coach that is hired to train a European soccer team, two very different types of football. Since Ted Lasso has no idea how soccer is played in Europe, viewers learn the ups and downs of European soccer right along with him.

My family and I love watching a good TV show and while my dad was scrolling through Netflix looking for a new show to watch, I recommended “Ted Lasso,” as I had heard lots of praise for the show. As I was about to walk away, leaving my dad to watch on his own, he asked if I wanted to stay to watch. I simply responded, “that’s why it’s called a pilot episode, right?” as I sat down. The first episode was so much more than what I was expecting and since the entire season was already out, my dad and I ended up finishing the show in one weekend. Now, after every episode is released, I Facetime my dad and we watch it at the same time.

“Ted Lasso” brings joy and happiness into every single episode. It never fails to make me laugh or cheer me up after a long day of classes and other work, so hopefully, it will for you too.

“Ted Lasso” streams exclusively on Apple TV+ and new episodes premiere every Friday, with all episodes now available for streaming.

“Mare of Easttown”

“Mare of Easttown” swept the categories of actors and actresses in a Limited Or Anthology Series Or Movie, with Kate Winslet, Evan Peters, and Julianne Nicholson, winning Outstanding Lead Actress, Outstanding Supporting Actor, and Outstanding Supporting Actress, respectively. If you are a fan of any of the cast members, especially “American Horror Story” actor, Evan Peters, I suggest watching just for them.

While this technically is another murder mystery, it has such a different take on the topic than “Only Murders in the Building.” This show gets down and dirty as it follows the main character, Mare (played by Winslet), as she attempts to solve a murder and a missing persons case. She is the town’s lead detective who struggles to balance her work and personal life. Her story is filled with so much emotion — sadness, anger, and even depression — and it feels so good to see someone like her on the screen. In other TV shows, they might try to paint a pretty picture of the main character, but HBO never does that with Mare, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

For those native Pennsylvanians who are missing their hometown, this will transport you back home. While the show takes place in the fictional town of Easttown, the accents, coffee, and locations are all part of authentic eastern PA culture. The filming for the show took place around the Chester and Delaware Country area, including multiple scenes filmed in Coatesville, PA. The characters even take on a “Delco accent,” which is extremely common for the area. During the filming, Winslet fell in love with Wawa, even saying that “Wawa a big part of my life for well over a year.” That’s one point for Wawa.

This PA-set show has seven episodes all of which are available for streaming on HBO Max.
