“My ex from high school is texting me and I think I want to get back together with them…”

I can’t tell you the number of times someone has told me this in my first three weeks of college. Girls, myself included, went into the year with high standards and expectations for a partner. My friends and I all dreamed about the perfect lady or gentleman we’d meet during welcome week. One with perfect hair that would sweep us all off of our feet. But when classes started and that perfect person never showed up, what happened? We opened Snapchat and texted our exes.

It seemed like a good idea at the time, but now we’re caught up in situationships and romanticizing the high school relationships that were probably toxic in the first place. Part of being homesick seems to include nostalgia for our high school sweethearts. This reconnection might not involve anything actually romantic or sexual. It might just involve rekindling a friendship with a person you used to date.

Suddenly, your dreams for the perfect relationships are gone and have been replaced by conversations that often end with being left on read. So here’s some advice from someone who has no business giving out relationship advice: be patient. The perfect person will find you eventually. Take some time to know yourself as an independent single woman. Take yourself on dates. Don’t wait for a significant other to call you beautiful, go ahead and say it yourself.

Keep your head up, girl, and don’t settle for anything less than what you deserve.
