Fashion’s biggest night happened in New York on Monday. The theme of the star-studded event was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which kicked off the Met’s new art installation, which opens on September 18, 2021.

As always, there were some great looks and some not-so-great looks. As the night kicked off, I was scrolling through Instagram and Twitter, every five minutes to see everyone’s looks. Although I’m no fashion expert, I do have my own opinions on who I think delivered on their looks. How I personally judge the looks is by a couple of specific things. Firstly, I see who actually followed the theme! If you go to the Met Gala and you don’t follow the theme, you should be ashamed of yourself, seriously! Secondly, I look at who delivered with their outfit, period. And lastly, I look at makeup and accessories, because they can truly make or break an outfit. So, without further ado, here are the best looks, in my opinion.

Lupita Nyong’o

Nyong’o wore a Versace jean dress with a beautiful updo. The dress was made with a dark jean material, with black accents and gorgeous pleating. The dress even had a jean train that added a more detailed silhouette to the dress. The black materials worked well with the jean material and created an aesthetic contrast. She looked absolutely beautiful, as always, and was actually dressed with the theme. When I think of American fashion, jeans are one of the first things that come to mind, and I can’t believe more people didn’t wear other jean garments.

Kendall Jenner

Now, I’m not the biggest fan of Kendall Jenner but, she ate this look up! Wearing Givenchy, Jenner got inspire by Audrey Hepburn’s “My Fair Lady” dress. The dress was embellished with crystals and featured many of the same lines and accessories as Audrey’s dress. The actual silhouette of the dress was gorgeous, although we have seen her do it multiple times, I think it works for this theme. The neckpiece adds a really great touch. The dress altogether is a really beautiful nod to Hepburn without replicating it. My only complaint is the lack of hair accessories. In “My Fair Lady,” Audrey wears the iconic dress with a matching headpiece, and I think that would’ve elevated the look for Jenner even more.

Yara Shahidi

Not only is Yara Shahidi straight-up gorgeous but, she knows how to dress! Her custom Dior gown was a nod to Old Hollywood. The gown was a neutral-toned, brown dress with layers of beading. The dress also had a gorgeous cream-colored cape that connected to the back and her head, creating a hood. The silhouette was to die for, as it was the perfect Old Hollywood-esq straight silhouette with a modern twist. Lastly, she paired the dress with gloves that matched the belt of the dress and incorporated the same beading. Her makeup and accessories went perfectly with the dress. All in all, she looked like an Old Hollywood actress on the Silver Screen.
