Tips to Make the Most of This Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UWindsor chapter.

As we begin a brand-new semester, starting it off empowered and motivated will make all the difference! Planning for a successful semester may seem like a tedious and tiresome task, but the following tips below will help you plan your semester within a matter of minutes!

  1. Start off with a realistic workload:

The most important thing is to know your own limits. How much can you handle? How difficult are your classes this semester? Do you have any other commitments outside of school you should take into consideration? Avoid overloading yourself as this may lead to burnout and significantly decrease the quality of your performance.

2. Keep organized:

Whether this be by using an agenda or a notepad, it is extremely important to remain organized. Set reminders for yourself, time-block your days, and always keep in check of your due dates. It is also crucial to keep your workspace organized! Perhaps add décor of your preference to your desk to motivate you to work (such as cute stationery sets, a lamp, or a post-it note board).

3. Make time for yourself:

Your mind and body are connected, and it is very important to be in sync with both to ensure success. Take time out of your busy schedule to take care of yourself, and this doesn’t just mean taking a spa day (those, of course, are important too!). Ensure a healthy diet, meal prep, exercise, meditate, or do whatever you have to do for you.

4.  Get enough sleep:

I know some nights this isn’t always possible (we’ve all had to cram a little the night before an exam, am I right?), but try to aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep every night. You’ll be awake with a clear mind and ready to take on the day. It’s scientifically proven to increase your mood as well, and who doesn’t love sleep? It’s a win-win!

5.  Find a mentor:

Don’t let yourself struggle past the point of recovery. It’s okay to seek help when you need it, especially to learn! If you find yourself struggling in a course, find a mentor! This doesn’t always have to be a paid tutor, but rather even a friend that can assist you in learning course material.

6.   Be on time:

Don’t be late to classes! Make sure to be on time to all your classes to indicate you’re eager to learn and so you don’t miss any important details! Show you care.

7. Make connections:

Talk to your professors and peers! It is great to make connections and get to know others within your learning environment as it broadens your scope for new opportunities. It will also boost your confidence and help you look forward to learning.

8. Get involved:

School can get boring, so it’s always great to spice things up by getting involved and giving back to our campus! There are so many clubs and volunteer opportunities you can take part in with a great cause. Go hunting and find your best fit!

Well, here are the 8 tips I have to ensure success. Hopefully some of these tips will come in hand for many of you. Do you have anything to add that helps keep you motivated throughout the semester? We’d love to hear from you!
