Sports are a major topic in today’s world, whether you have a favorite sports team, someone you know participates in one, or you, yourself are involved. Whenever a game occurs, students, alumni, family, anyone and everyone come together to cheer on the teams. Unfortunately what you do not hear enough about is the amount of people attending women’s sports vs the amount of people attending men’s sports.
So why is this? I asked some of my professors and peers to take a short survey about this topic. 18 out of 19 people said that there are more people that attend male sports. 60% of students said it was solely due to media coverage. Other responses include sexism, weakness, and “they know how to play.”
Some solutions to this recurrence is to promote as much as possible. Just because others say that men’s sports are more interesting and more fast paced, does not mean that it is true. Do not let others’ biased opinions influence yours. It’s good to support your friends, school, or if you are interested in the sport. If you are interested in men’s basketball, try going to a women’s basketball game. Just because it is not men playing the sport does not mean that it is not interesting. If a sport piques your interest, watch that sport in men’s and women’s. Get involved.
