The Best New York Fashion Week Looks of 2021

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NCSU chapter.

New York Fashion Week is back and better than ever! The event lasted six days from September 7-12th and I decided to go through every single designer that had a showcase to find what I think are the best looks of the week. This was obviously a very trying task as I went through over 125 shows–but it was all worth it. I have organized my favorites by designer to keep it short. I initially was going to show every outfit individually, but there are probably hundreds so I will spare you the details. With that being said, here are my favorites.

Make sure you scroll through to see my favorite looks from each collection.

CHRISTIAN SIRIANO

Christian Siriano did not disappoint with his collection this season. It is definitely one of my favorites. I am a huge fan of vibrant colors and black and white–two completely different ends of the color spectrum, and I think this collection represents that perfectly. I also love blazers and poofy dresses and think Siriano did a great job with his pieces. I absolutely love the off-centered black blazer (slide 9) and how unique it is. The entire collection was so fun and yet so simple at the same time, which I’m obsessed with.

ULLA JOHNSON

Moving on to Ulla Johnson’s collection. I will admit that I am not a huge fan of everything that is in the collection this season, but I did find four pieces that I liked. I think the entire collection has almost a bohemian farm girl vibe and I’m so here for it. There is an even mix of vibrant and muted colors which I think makes a good combination. The white floral dress with the mesh (slide 1) is so elegant and is definitely my favorite look from this collection.

THREEASFOUR

Threeasfour is definitely one of the funkiest collections that took to the runway this NYFW. I was really not a fan of most of the pieces, but I am absolutely obsessed with this suit. I think this is the only menswear piece that I picked this year, but I think that pattern is so much fun and definitely so unique. I could totally see Timothée Chalamet showing up to an event wearing this and hope he does sometime soon.

DUNDAS X REVOLVE

I really was not expecting to like this collection (not really sure why), but I actually really liked some of the pieces. Like Christian Siriano, I like how there was an even mix of both vibrant colored pieces and black and white pieces. I absolutely love the cow print coat (slide 6) and hope that I can add it to my closet soon.

PETER DO

Peter Do’s collection this year was so simple, yet so elegant. I don’t think that all of the pieces and shows during fashion week need to be over the top and outrageous, and Peter Do’s collection is the perfect representation as to why not all pieces have to be that way. I love the pastel colors that he used as well as the flower embroidery that he had on some of the darker pieces. He has simple pieces like trench coats and business shirts but was able to make the collection work and seem unique.

PROENZA SCHOULER

Vibrant colors seem to be a recurring theme at this year’s NYFW. Proenza Schouler executes the vibrant color trend perfectly through their unique pieces. I love the red dress with tassels (slide 1) and think it would be so fun to wear as I would not stop shaking the tassels around. The tassels were present in a lot of the pieces in this collection and I definitely think that they stood out the most compared to the other pieces.

PRABAL GURUNG

Prabal Gurung’s show may be one of my favorites from this year. I was audibly gasping as I was scrolling through the photos of the pieces. I am obsessed with the entire color palette that was used to create the collection. The fabrics were also so gorgeous and each garment was so well put together and styled. My favorite might be the two-piece pink, white, and orange shirt and skirt with the huge bow on the back (slide 8), I think it is so fun and really stood out to me.

WOLK MORAIS

This collection was all over the place in the best way. From dresses, to blazers, to trousers, all of the outfits are mismatched but work so well. None of them look like they came from the same collection which I strangely love. My favorite is the gold and silver dress. I think it’s so unique and not to bring up Timothée Chalamet again, but I think it would match so well with the Tom Ford suit he wore to the 2021 Cannes Film Festival in July.

BADGLEY MISCHKA

This collection. WOW. I love so many pieces I had to make two posts worth of photos. Everything is so elegantly made and I can’t lie when I say that my jaw dropped multiple times when scrolling through photos. Like Wolk Morais, lots of the pieces don’t look like they would be in the same group, but I think that could be indicative of a really amazing collection. I seriously don’t think I can pick one favorite but I really like the green sequin suit (post 1, slide 4), the tan and pink sparkly v-neck dress (post 1, slide 9), and the butterfly dress with a dramatic neckline (post 2, slide 1.)

ADAM LIPPES

This was another uniquely beautiful collection. I loved the muted whites and beiges that were used as well as the vibrant colors and embroidery that were present on a ton of pieces. The floral fabrics that were present were also so beautiful. I really loved the long white dress with the full embroidery of the flower vase with flowers coming out of it(slide 3) that stretched across the entire gown.

NAEEM KHAN

I have VERY mixed emotions about the collection that Naeem Khan sent down the runway this year. The first pieces were VERY VERY similar to those that Versace did in their SS21 collection and I almost thought I was looking at Versace when I saw the first photos. There were also very similar pieces to past Etro and Dolce and Gabbana pieces. BUT, I did like some of the other pieces that were in the collection. There was a nice blend of vibrant colors and beading which I can appreciate.

MOSCHINO

I LOVE THIS COLLECTION!!!! I know I know, this is not everyone’s cup of tea, but I absolutely adore this collection. Jeremy Scott did a really good job but I will say it does not look like a typical Moschino wardrobe. I think this collection is very reminiscent of “Clueless”, Barbies, and the 60s–all of which I love. Each outfit was very similar but very unique in its own way. The fabrics were so cool and detailed and everything fit together in a perfect childhood couture fantasy kind of way. Definitely one of my favorite collections that I’ve seen this year.

CAROLINA HERRERA

Another one of my favorite collections was Carolina Herrera. I loved the pinks, reds, blacks, and whites and think they blend together so well. Each piece was so fun and elegant at the same time. I love the black and white layered tulle dress (slide 2) as well as the pink puff sleeve dress (slide 2) and love how classic both of them feel while also giving off a more modern feel.

SERGIO HUDSON

Sergio Hudson’s collection is another group that perfectly executes the whole combination of vibrant colors and black and white. I also am OBSESSED with monochromatic outfits and Hudson executes this PERFECTLY!!! One of the best executions of the monochromatic feel of the entire week.

MICHAEL KORS COLLECTION

Staying true to his roots, Michael Kors executed such a simple collection but of course pulled it off. I can’t lie when I say that when the show started I was sorely disappointed with the looks that were showcased first. I did not want to continue watching but as the show went on, I was able to find a lot of classic looks that I actually really love. The pink gingham suit set (slide 3) is by far my favorite of the collection and hopefully I can add it to my closet. I also was expecting for Bella Hadid to close the show since she is the face of the brand, but was not disappointed when her older sister, Gigi Hadid took the stage instead.

JASON WU COLLECTION

This is another collection that perfectly showcases vibrancy and black and white. I love this collection and the fabrics are some of my favorites. I absolutely love the white, green and blue watercolor fabric (slides 5 and 9) that was used on a few dresses and fell in love with it instantly.

MARKARIAN

This is another collection that I absolutely LOVE!! Each piece is so upbeat and girly and I’m obsessed. Anything pink and sparkly I’m naturally attracted to, so I was bound to love this show. The pieces are so beautifully made and I would die to have them in my closet. I love the pink dress with floral appliques and long train (slide 4) the most out of all of the outfits presented, but even then it was difficult to pick just one. Overall, this is definitely one of the collections from this season that stands out to me due to the fabrics, colors, and overall designs.

BIBHU MOHAPATRA

This entire collection is SHEER madness. (See what I did there?) I was not expecting the delicateness and beauty of this collection when I started looking at it. Each dress is absolutely gorgeous and the detailing is immaculate. The dresses have almost a light and dainty feeling and I honestly think anyone who wears them would feel like a princess. I seriously cannot pick a favorite because they are all so beautiful in their own way.

CHRISTIAN COWAN

Christian Cowan really knows how to execute a jaw-dropping collection. Following the vibrancy and black and white trends, Cowan’s pieces are some of the perfect examples of the two. I wish I had a camera on my face when I saw the sparkly hot pink coat with matching fur (slide 1). As I mentioned earlier, I am obsessed with pink and am naturally drawn to it, so when I saw this look I was hooked. The entire line has elements of the Y2K fashion that is trending right now. Each piece is either sparkly, colorful, or both and I love it.

BRANDON MAXWELL

I was so looking forward to this show and Brandon Maxwell did NOT disappoint!! The entire line was fun and psychedelic and really different from everything else that I have seen at NYFW so far. The patterns of the fabrics are insane and trippy and the looks that Maxwell put together make the pieces insanely unique. Once again, it’s hard for me to pick a favorite out of all of these pieces, but I really like the pink and red chiffon coverup dress (slide 3), the pink and blue hypnotic dress (slide 8), and the rose goal pleated dress (slide 4).

CINQ À SEPT

When I saw that Cinq À Sept was having a show, I became extremely excited. One of my favorite tops is from there and I was looking forward to seeing what they would come out with. I can’t lie when I say that I was a bit underwhelmed, but there were a few pieces that I enjoyed. Pastels were used a lot in this line which I am a huge fan of. I really like the spaghetti strap sparkly pink dress (slide 1) and think it is so dainty and fun.

PATBO

PatBo’s SS22 collection has a really fun twist on classic pieces. I love the pink blazer (slide 1) with slightly puffy shoulders and designs on the collar. The twist is the cutouts on the sides. I feel like there were lots of blazers seen on the runway at NYFW but the cutouts and detailing separate this one from the rest. It wasn’t just the blazers in her collection, it was the dresses too. All of the dresses were so unique with cutouts and asymmetrical designs.

DUNCAN

Duncan’s line was definitely not one of my favorites, but the piece shown caught my eye. It has this sixties vibe to it which I am obsessed with and I absolutely love the pink and red color blocking. The matching headscarf really ties the entire look together for me.

TADASHI SHOJI

THIS COLLECTION!!!! This was another line where each piece looks drastically different from the other, but they all work together. Each piece SCREAMS elegance and many of the pieces remind of things that Princess Diana or Kate Middleton would wear like the blue long-sleeved dress (post 1, slide 8).

VERONICA BEARD

Like Cinq À Sept, I was excited when I saw that Veronica Beard was doing a show, but I was a bit disappointed when I saw it. I did like some pieces though and in true Veronica Beard fashion, they all represent class and elegance. From ruffled linen dresses to red leather jackets and skirts, although basic, the line is classic and that’s definitely not a bad thing.

ALICE + OLIVIA

Everything about this showcase was amazing. I love that they showed the colors in rainbow order, and if you pay close attention, with every new color that is shown, it is added into the majority black and white background. This line included everything: colored jeans, sparkly dresses, two-piece jacket and skirt sets, jumpsuits, and gogo fashion. The collection is honestly all over the place, but I loved it all.

HALEIA

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!! That’s all I can say about the Haleia line. These dresses are absolutely stunning. The fabrics are gorgeous and the styles of the dresses are so unique. The shoot was taken at what appears to be a boardwalk/beach and the colors of the ocean and sand work perfectly to compliment the colors of all of the dresses. I feel like I have said this a thousand times, but I genuinely think that this was my favorite line from this year’s NYFW.

PAMELLA ROLAND

This was definitely one of the more mature lines that were shown at NYFW. Each outfit is drop-dead gorgeous and I can definitely see them hitting the red carpet come awards season. There were classic pieces like the black poofy short dress (post 2, slide 6) and more unique and “out there” pieces like the off-the-shoulder yellow sequin gown (post 1, slide 8). Overall, I really enjoyed the Pamella Roland collection this year and love how meticulous the detailing is in every piece.

DUR DOUX

Dur Doux was a very interesting show this year. All of the looks were very different from one another, but I did really enjoy them. I love the green dress with floral appliques (slide 1) and think that it is reminiscent of recent Dolce and Gabbana designs.

KAMILLA PURSHIE

Talk about floral appliques!! These Kamilla Purshie dresses are so incredibly gorgeous. The giant flowers attached to these gowns are my favorites in the line but I also love the tulle that was included in other pieces. I really do like the black chiffon gown with a long train (slide 7), it definitely seems like something that would be worn to the Oscars.

RVNG

When I was researching all of the shows, it took me FOREVER to find the RVNG show and I almost gave up, but I am so glad that I didn’t. This line was so exciting and fun and I am obsessed with the huge dress look. I also really liked the purple blazer with white undershirt (slide 5) and it reminded me of Prince, who my mother loves. Overall, I loved the pieces in this line and really enjoyed the bright colors, tulle, and sequins used in the pieces.

RODARTE

The Rodarte line was definitely interesting this year. I was expecting more, but still really enjoyed the show. I did not like how at the end the same dress was presented in twenty different colors, but I can look past that. I am absolutely obsessed with the pink sparkly fringe dress (slide 6) and audibly gasped when I saw it (note, I was in my school’s library and people shot me death stares.) I think that the line was strange, but I did enjoy the pop of colors that contrasted with the beiges and whites that were very prevalent in the line.

ANNA SUI

This line screams beach resort chic and I am SO here for it. Each look seems like something that your really stylish mom would wear as a coverup and that’s all I could think of when looking at the collection. I really love the floral appliques and the brightness of all of the colors and it definitely stands out compared to some of the more simple collections that were seen.

LAQUAN SMITH

Sparkles, feathers, and the Empire State Building, what gets better than that. Laquan Smith executed the perfect fashion show and I’m LIVING for it. I love the sparkly pieces that Smith did and they really remind me of 90s Versace pieces and Naomi Campbell. I also am obsessed with the white fur jacket (slide 3) and the layered fur is really unique and different.

TORY BURCH

When I saw Tory Burch’s name on the list of shows that were walking this year, I was not expecting what she sent down the runway. I actually really liked the collection and thought it really stood out. I thought there was a really nice balance between the darker neutrals and the warmer-toned colors that she used. The construction of the pieces was unique and they were overall really cool. Tory Burch holds a special place in my heart because when I was three I was given my first pair of designer shoes which were Tory Burch flats. Of course, they hurt my feet and to this day I remember getting home and throwing them off not yet realizing that in the words of my mom “sometimes you have to suffer for fashion.”

Oscar De La Renta

I am really disappointed that there wasn’t an actual show for this line because every piece is GORGEOUS!! I was not able to find shots of the individual pieces, but I think the video that they put together was so fun and showcased the pieces really well. I love the ending black frilly dress that Irina Shayk modeled. The entire line was so incredibly fun and it is definitely one of my favorites from the year.

TOM FORD

Two words to summarize NYFW: TOM FORD. I am literally speechless at this collection. I am so absolutely obsessed and in love with this collection. It is so insanely wonderful. Tom Ford is a visionary and I don’t think I will ever shut up over this collection. This is one of the few shows that I was able to watch live and I sat at my computer with my jaw dropped for the entire ten-minute show. I am a huge sucker for anything sparkly and shiny and this line was the perfect representation of that. It had sequins, iridescence, and metallics and I’m in love. I knew that there was a reason why Tom Ford was closing the show and this line justified it. I don’t think Tom Ford has ever made a bad piece in his life and his track record from Gucci to now proves it. I got goosebumps when he took the stage at the end.  Now I need to figure out how to make tons of money fast so I can buy the entire collection. I loved the matching gold leopard print men’s and women’s outfits (post 2, slides 2 & 3) and the hot pink sparkly top, blue iridescent blazer with orange sparkly pants (post 1, slide 1). These are just some of the few incredibly unique pieces that were included in this collection. I seriously could not stop talking about this collection but for the sake of time, I will stop now.

All in all, I really enjoyed watching all of the shows from New York Fashion Week this year. I think there were really solid collections and some beautiful pieces that I could only dream of owning one day. My favorite collections were Tom Ford, Moschino, Prabal Gurung, Badgley Mischka, Markarian, Tadashi Shoji, Haleia, Pamella Roland, Christian Siriano, Oscar De La Renta, and Carolina Herrera.  I am so looking forward to next year’s shows but in the meantime, I will just continue fawning over the looks from this year and trying to spot them on the red carpet come awards season.
