What To Do During Your First Week At College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Lynn chapter.

Now that the start of the fall semester is around the corner, first-year students are filled with many emotions. Some may experience homesickness, and others are thrilled about this new experience. However, a familiar feeling among newcomers is unusual in this new place you now call home. This is normal; you are not used to it yet. Here are some tips on what to do during your first week at college to make this transition more enjoyable.

Attend On-Campus Events

The best place to meet new people and make new friends. Every university allows you to get to know your classmates from all around the world at on-campus events. Take this opportunity and meet people! I remember attending trivia and movie nights in my freshman year, which I definitely don’t regret. It was a way to do something that interested and distracted me, and at the same time, it made me make new friends.

Find Your Classrooms

Before the first day of class, take your time to explore the campus. This will make your life easier as you won’t have to rush or get late to class on the first day. Usually, universities will give you a welcome package where you can find a campus map. However, if they don’t, it’s okay! If you need help, contact your resident assistant or your community advisor, and they will be glad to help. You can also approach campus safety for any additional help. You have many resources to go to, so you are not alone.

Make a Connection with your RA

RA’s are always there for you and can be very helpful. If they haven’t been introduced to you yet, knock on their door and get to know your RA. Remember your resident assistant is there to assist you. If you have any questions, need support, or even need to express issues with roommates, you should go directly to your RA. This is your go-to person, so be sure to establish a good relationship from the beginning.

Check Out the Involvement Fair

Most universities host an involvement fair at the beginning of each term where students can explore different clubs, sororities, fraternities, and many more. This is an excellent opportunity for you to join and meet people that have the same interests.

Decorate Your Dorm

Make your dorm feel like home to get familiarized quickly. Give it your touch, so it’s not an empty room that provokes sad emotions. Hang pictures, put your country’s flag, and make it a space you will enjoy being at. You can get adorable stuff at Target, Walmart, Amazon, Dormify, The Container Store, and more!

Remember, the first week of college can be overwhelming and filled with emotions. However, it’s the beginning of a new chapter in your life, and you have to take full advantage of it. Stay in contact with your family and friends from home as they will always make you feel better. And most importantly: enjoy!
