Hi everyone!
I am super excited to introduce the first in a series of blog posts called “Gen’s Gems.” Here, I will discuss my music playlists (conveniently located on the right handside of the HC homepage), up-and-coming bands/music artists I am currently listening to and think YOU should be too. Why “gems”? Gems–rubies, emeralds, and sapphires oh my!–are precious, and I think music is too. :)
This week, I have designed a playlist called “5 Hot Artists to Watch.” You may not be too familiar with these guys/ladies, so take some time to get to know them!
MIKE POSNER
“If I could write you a song to make you fall in love…” ‘Scuse me Mike, but I think you just succeeded. With a smooth voice and catchy melodies, this Duke University graduate charms with his hit single “Cooler Than Me.” I am especially excited about his song “Please Don’t Go”, an infectious tune that I have a strong feeling will tear up the airwaves. Take a listen!
MoZella
She looks like she just stepped out of an Anthropologie catolog and her vocals certainly match her destinctive look. The beautiful Detriot-born singer electrifies with songs like “Manhattan” and “Stay.” MoZella also has a soft spot for philanthropy; she recently performed at a benefit concert for She’s The First.
WIZ KHALIFA
Reminiscent of artists like Kid Cudi (<3) and B.O.B, Wiz Khalifa
mixes fun melodies with impressive rhymes. His song “The Thrill” may be a summer 2010 favorite, but his latest “This Plane” is certainly a worthy follow-up. Another honorable mention: “Say Yeah.”
MARINA AND THE DIAMONDS
A Perez Hilton favorite, Marina Diamandis has already been featured in the pages of Nylon and TeenVOGUE. Her powerful voice adds theatricality to each track on her latest album, “The Family Jewels.” Creating a sound that is ultimately all her own, Marina is able to set herself apart from other female artists like Lady Gaga and Kate Nash. Must Listen: “I Am Not a Robot.”
CIVIL TWILIGHT
As a devoted listener since freshman year, I am so excited that Civil Twilight is finally making themselves known with recent exposure on mtvU and Brown University’s radio station, WBRU. Straight from South Africa, the band mentions on their website that they are heavily influenced by British and American musicians and it certainly shows. Lead singer Steven McKellar’s voice is chillingly beautiful and accompanies lush instrumentals in pieces like single “Letters from the Sky.” The super-sweet “Next to Me” is definitely my favorite: “I’ve got you next to me and I don’t want to waste it…” Aww!
What do you think of these five artists? Do you think they have what it takes? Let me know in the comments section. Happy Listening!
HC Love,
Gen
