Ode to Britney

This Tuesday’s Glee episode on Britney Spears  is even more anticipated than both the Madonna and Lady Gaga episodes. Check it out:

In her prime (although Britney has probably had one of the greatest comebacks ever in the history of the music business) Britney Spears was incredible. Even before she had that ridiculous six-pack and mastery of the “I-just-had-crazy-sex” hair style, reps on the Mickey Mouse Club must have seen some kind of talent shining through her so-so voice and average girl next door looks.

I would argue Britney was one of the best performers our generation: she knew exactly how to execute a provocative dance routine without scaring away her fan base (umm, X-tina?), and created a signature style in her music videos and live performances that made people immediately know they were watching Britney Spears, even if they had just tuned in. For your enjoyment, here are my two favorite Britney Spears live performances:

“Oops I Did it Again” at the VMAs in 2000

“I’m a Slave for You” at the VMAs in 2001

“Toxic” music video – what girl didn’t fantasize about looking that hot naked and covered in sequins?

The music video for one of her less popular songs, “My Prerogative” from her Greatest Hits album, was the last video before her plunge into rehab and personal problems. And I think she looks incredible.

What is your favorite Britney moment? Share in the comments below! And be sure to tune into Glee Tuesday night!

Joanna Buffum is a senior English major and Anthropology minor at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine.  She is from Morristown, NJ and in the summer of 2009 she was an advertising intern for OK! Magazine and the editorial blog intern for Zagat Survey in New York City. This past summer she was an editorial intern for MTV World's music website called MTV Iggy, writing fun things like album and concert reviews for bands you have never heard of before. Her favorite books are basically anything involving fantasy fiction, especially the Harry Potter series and “Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell” by Susanna Clarke. In her free time she enjoys snowboarding, playing intramural field hockey, watching House MD, and making paninis. In the spring of 2010 she studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark, and she misses the friendly, tall, and unusually attractive Danish people more than she can say. After college, she plans on pursuing a career in writing, but it can be anywhere from television script writing, to magazine journalism, to book publishing.
