As any budget-savvy Collegiette™ knows, sales are great, clearance sales are better, and giveaways reign supreme above all other things. I love free stuff – I mean seriously – who doesn’t? The unfortunate thing about giveaways and freebies, however, is that you ususally have to either compete to win them or leave it up to chance and hope that your name gets drawn out of some hat.
In addition to getting stuff for free, another thing I love is getting rid of junk. Old textbooks, CDs I haven’t listened to since high school yet still randomly brought to college with me, and random movies that I haven’t watched in ages seem to constantly clutter up my room and my bookshelves.
This is where swapping comes in. When you swap, you get rid of some of your random clutter and get something that you actually want in return!
Her Campus has recently partnered with Swap.com – a site that makes swapping simple and easy. It works a lot like ebay but instead of looking for things you want to buy and sell, you list things you want to give away and then find things you want to trade them for.
Swap.com features all kinds of books, CDs, movies and video games. The best part is probably that you don’t have to swap like with like. For example: I recently posted a copy of Darwin’s Origin of Species and found out that I could trade it for Season 1 of True Blood. SWEET!
Here’s how it works:
You list out the books, CDs, movies and video games that you have to trade, then choose the items you want to receive and swap.com does the rest. Within seconds of adding the items you’re willing to part with, your account will populate with all the things you can receive. Once you find what you want, click “Get now” next to the item and you’ll be on your way to swapping your stuff.
There is a small swap fee for each item swapped (50 cents for low value items and $1 for high value items), and you’ll pay for shipping, which usually averages around $3.50. That’s it! No other costs. So, you can round out your Twilight series (any other vampire fans out there?) for 50 cents, or swap for a new Wii fitness game (um, amazing) for $1.
Swap.com and their partners, The Swapaholics, have also recently entered the women’s fashion scene. For their fashion swaps, you just gather up the things you don’t wear anymore and bring them to one of the Swap.com “Swap Meets” in your local area, and leave with a whole new wardrobe! You can check out Swap.com for more information on the fashion swaps.
