As Valentine’s Day creeps upon us, it’s safe to say that love is in the air, and if you’re in a relationship it couldn’t be better. The sky is bluer, the sun is brighter and the sound of birds chirping seems to follow you around campus. But for those of us who are rolling solo this Valentine’s Day, this love fest can be nauseatingly irritating. The best way I like to deal with my AVDAD (Anti-Valentine’s Day Aggression Disorder) is to drown out the sound of love with some awesome music. So I’ve compiled a list of the best 10 anti love songs for those of us who just can’t stand all that red and pink (it just clashes, ok?).

  1. Train in Vain – The Clash. Starting out with some old school punk, this song talks about betrayal and lies while still having an awesome beat that just makes you want to shake that thang! Never has a song about someone scorned been so upbeat.
  2. Gives You Hell – All American Rejects. This song is the perfect way to say eff you to   that certain someone who broke your heart, the boy that never gave you the time of day, or that girl in class that you just can’t stand.
  3. Rolling in the Deep – ADELE. Off her highly anticipated sophomore album, this song shows that person that broke your heart exactly what they’re missing and is the perfect foil to any sappy love song.
  4. Smile Lily Allen. “When I see you cry, it makes me smile.” Enough said.
  5. Used to Love U – John Legend. This song screams “I’m better than you so get to steppin’! ” The perfect anti-love song message if you ask me.
  6. IrreplaceableBeyonce. Another classic “anti-love” song, this diva makes her message loud and clear that she can find someone new in a snap.
  7. Perfectly LonelyJohn Mayer. This song is a great reminder that being single does not make you pathetic, just hardcore.
  8. Superwoman – Alicia Keys. Hey we can’t all have the pipes Alicia Keys has, but we can still feel like superwomen, with or without a boy!
  9. You Know I’m No Good – Amy Winehouse. Only Amy Winehouse could make being a hot mess sound good. This song is the perfect way to drown out the sound of cupid’s arrow.
  10. Doo Wop (That Thing) – Lauryn Hill. No one can eliminate the sounds of sunshine and rainbows quite like Ms. Lauryn Hill.

For all of my Valentine’s Day haters, I hope these songs will help you to squash the sound of love in the air, and I wish you the best of luck on this dismal day.

Originally from the laidback beach-town of Santa Barbara, the California native finds the fast-paced nature and eccentricity of LA extremely exciting. Once more, she decided to expand her horizons when she studied abroad this past fall in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Madeline wants to pursue a career in the entertainment industry and is considering broadcast journalism and public relations as potential options. On campus, she is currently the Public Relations & Marketing Director for the student- run organization Fashion and Student Trends and an intern at E! News. She served as an entertainment reporter on UCLA’s accredited student newspaper, The Daily Bruin, under the video division and is a current member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. During her free time, she enjoys playing tennis, exercising, going to the beach, shopping (online shopping will be the death of her!), reading Glamour and Cosmo, eating Mexican food and sushi, spending time with her friends, practicing her Spanish, and satisfying her weakness for caffeine with Starbuck’s lattes.
