College can be a stressful time in someone’s life. It’s hard to balance hectic class schedules, work schedules, homework and trying to find time to be part of the college experience. It’s no wonder most freshman gain what has been named the freshman 15; but don’t let the name fool you, anyone can fall prey. Towson students become aware very quickly that finding healthy options on our campus can feel harder than their trigonometry homework.  Even with our various food areas, it can sometimes feel like the only choices for a snack are donuts or chips.

In trying to keep those unwanted pounds away, the main thing is to plan. Plan, plan, plan, and then plan some more.  Having your own stash of easy on the go snacks in your dorm or at home can make eating better so much easier.  Here is a list of easy snack to keep on you, and keep the pounds off!

Apples and Bananas:
Don’t take these staple fruit items for granted. You can buy a 7 day supply each week, and keep them right on your desk in your dorm, or on your counter at home. Healthy, quick and filling, these fruits are the perfect snack.

Forget yours? The Brick Street Café sells fresh apple and Bananas 7 days a week!

Trail mix: This easy to carry snack is a great way to fight off hunger. Try making your own and adding raisins, almonds, peanuts, and dried fruit (carful with the nuts, they can be high in calories if you eat to many!)

Forget yours? Almost all of the vending machines on campus offer portioned peanuts which is a great option in a pinch.

Baby Carrots and other raw veggies:
You can cut these up the night before and they are ready to go in the morning! Easy to snack on between classes, this healthy ultra low calorie snack is a great way to get between meals.

Forget yours? The Brick Street Café and Susquehanna Food Court sell containers of raw veggies!

Cut up fruit: Nothing taste better to me than some sweet pineapple and melon when I’m hungry. With healthy carbohydrates to keep your brain going through the day, this is the perfect snack. Cut up your favorite fruits and put them in a container with a lid!

Forget yours? Paws has fresh fruit that you can mix and match!

Remember, being creative and planning are the best way to stay healthy and in shape!
