Lose the Freshman 15: Cooking Confession

This is a sponsored feature. All opinions are 100% from Her Campus.

I have a confession to make.

I absolutely hate cooking.

Okay, I don’t really hate cooking; I just hate the fact that I can’t cook to save my life. Ask my roommates, and they’ll tell you that I just learned how to boil water this semester. I’ll be honest, I didn’t even know what boiling water looked like before this year.

It’s sad, considering the family I come from. My mother is probably the greatest cook you’ll ever meet, and I’m not just saying that. She can light up a kitchen like the sun lights up the sky. She just intrinsically knows what tastes good together, and she’s not afraid to experiment.

So it pains me to admit that the cooking gene seems to have skipped right past me. Or maybe I’m just so spoiled from all my mom’s delicious food that I never felt the need to learn how to cook.

Regardless, it’s pathetic. And it’s time to change that. Hopefully this diet will finally give me the motivation to learn once and for all how to navigate a kitchen. Or at least learn how to cook simple things, like sauteed vegetables, baked chicken and simple pasta.

oven baked chickenYes, I realize it’s pitiful that I don’t know how to cook any of these things, but I’m willing to learn, and that’s worth something, right?

So you may be wondering what I’ve been eating for the past couple of days if I can’t even boil water without help.

Well, I must admit that I am a creature of habit. And when I find something that I really enjoy eating, especially if it’s healthy, I usually stick to eating it until I get sick of it. And I rarely get sick of food.

I could eat literally eat a cup of cereal and milk for breakfast every day of the week and never tire of it. So I’ve been doing just that. I’m currently on a strawberry-flavored shredded wheat kick, but we’ll see how long that lasts.

However, I’m proud to say that I pack my lunch every day, and I have been doing it long before I began this diet. I even carry it in my special My Little Pony lunchbox to campus. It’s so precious.

IMG 3026Lunch for me usually consists of a vegetable, a fruit, a snacky-type item and some sort of sandwich or wrap. Today, as you’ll see, I had a golden delicious apple, carrots, pretzel sticks and a delicious fat-free Caesar salad chicken wrap. Lunch couldn’t get much more perfect than that in my eyes.

Dinner was another matter. I only had time to grab dinner with a friend in a dining hall, because I was on campus all day. But you’ll be happy to know that I stayed away from fried and fatty temptations. I settled on a tangarine, a side salad with low-fat ranch dressing and a whole-wheat turkey sandwich with cheese and mustard.

I guess I’m not the most thrilling person ever when it comes to food choices and trying new foods. I like what I like and as long as I’m eating healthy, I think that’s all that matters.

However, suggestions are always welcome for quick, easy meal ideas! Send them my way here. And while you’re at it, join me in dieting! I promise you it’s not so bad. It’s actually kind of exciting…at least until my first weigh-in.

Sara Kaner was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California and first fell in love with journalism as a freshman in high school thanks to her wonderful Intro to Journalism teacher. A family move brought her to Fort Myers, Florida the summer after her freshman year of high school, but she continued to pursue an interest in journalism. She is in her second year at the University of Florida and is pursuing a dual degree in Public Relations and Psychology. She is heavily involved on the UF campus and dedicates most of her time to her various organizations and to her friends. She loves people, magazines, sports and social media, and she hopes to combine all three in her job someday. For now, she aspires to attend Law School and specialize in Media Law. She secretly aspires to be Chelsea Handler, but she's happy being herself for the moment, just as long as she can lose the freshman 15 this semester.
