Everyone who owns an iPhone, Droid, Blackberry or any other smart device knows the essentials. Apps like Facebook, Twitter and FourSquare let you creep, tweet and check in from anywhere, but what apps is your smart phone missing? Here are my Top 10 apps for the tech savvy collegiettes™
1. DailyBurn- With spring break approaching everyone is hitting the ARC and saying no to seconds. This app can take you a step further by tracking your exercise and caloric intake. It tells you the nutritional value of your favorite foods and has hundreds of exercise options for you to choose from.
2. iMapmyrun – Gearing up to run the half or full Illinois marathon this spring? (are you as nervous as I am about it?) This app works with its website where you can map out your routes, save your favorites and track your training program.
3. Groupon- What is better than getting great deals for all of your favorite stores, restaurants and attractions? Being able to buy the deals from your phone and then use them 30 seconds later at the store of your choice. This way, you don’t have to buy the deal unless you know for sure you w
ill use it.
4. Words With Friends- This is my current obsession. Brush up on your vocabulary skills with a Scrabble game that you can play anywhere. I am currently involved in about 7 games with friends and family and both Droids and iPhones are compatible. Small words that can earn you points when played strategically: qadi, xi, zee and any word with the letters Z or J in it (you’ll thank me later.)
5. Don’t Dial- At some point in our college social careers, we will all make a call that wish we hadn’t. Wouldn’t it be cool if our cell phones had a breathalyzer? Here is the next best thing: enter in a number of someone that you probably shouldn’t be calling past midnight and Don’t Dial will stop you from any poor choices. A junior on campus (who wishes to remain anonymous) calls this her lifesaver, “every girl on campus should get this!”
6. Gossip Junkie- This indulgent app has more than 20 gossip sites/blogs including Perez Hilton, E! Online and People all in one spot. Tabloids are every girl’s guilty pleasure, and rather than buy magazines weekly, buy this app for .99 cents and keep yourself busy in class.
7. Black Sheep Mobile- Find all of your favorite campus articles, shout-outs and party pictures plus nightly specials at all your favorite bars without roaming campus for the latest edition. Now that embarrassing picture of your roommate that you sent in is that much easier to show off.
8. Kik/ Skype – If you are like me, 75% of your friends are currently jet setting all over Europe and the world under the façade of “Studying Abroad.” Once I got over my jealously and figured out how much I missed them, both of these apps came in handy. Kik is like BBming, only iPhones are allowed to join in the fun, and if you have a phone with video compatibility, you can Skype your friends in Spain right in to KAM’s.
9. Fatbooth- Say you are sitting in your apartment late at night and your roommate’s leftover funfetti cake is staring right at you. Need a reason to just say no? Enter Fatbooth. Besides being an entertaining tool at parties, this app shows you what you and your friends would look like if you packed on the freshmen 50.
10. IlliniMobile- Stay connected to campus with DI news and sports, The Buzz, WPGU-107.1, classifieds, apartment searches and a local restaurant guide. Champaign might be completely surrounded by farmland, but right now so are you, so you might as well know what is going on here!
Honorable Mention Apps:
The Weather Channel– Junior Tara Dhiman swears by this app, “You have to know what to wear to class!”
Chegg – Rent your textbooks right from your phone and save that money for something you’ll really use!
Poynt – Look up gas prices, restaurants, businesses, movies and people. Basically anything you want to find, Poynt can help you.
