Big Hair! | Campus Style with theSalon

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Iowa State chapter.

Q: Is teasing your hair bad for its health?

A: Try not to tease it really tight and don’t use a can of hairspray each time.  What really damages your hair is brushing it out. If you tease your hair and don’t make a helmet out of your hairspray, your hair should be okay. Just be careful when you brush it out. Teasing your hair essentially creates knots—and when you try to rip your brush through knots, it will rip your hair. To gently get the knots out, put conditioner in your and use a thick-toothed comb to comb through your conditioned hair in the shower. (Trick of the trade: Don’t brush wet hair. Use a thick-toothed comb.)

(We do hope you’re not going for this look!)

Q: How do you get that big hair everyone wants?

A: Step 1… For big curls, blow-dry just-washed hair haphazardly until it’s almost dry. Then wrap two-inch sections around medium-sized hot rollers—you’ll need about 12 for this look. Let them sit for about 20 minutes. Unwrap them carefully and brush through your hair to expand curls.  (Trick of the trade: Use Unite Boosta spray.) Step 2… Use a round brush to smooth back a three-inch section of hair along your hairline in the front. Brush the piece back tightly and secure on each side with a bobby-pin that matches your hair color.  Step 3… Hold your style in place by spritzing a volumizing hairspray all over—apply it from about eight inches away as you scrunch the ends. (Trick of the trade: Use Unite Go365 hairspray.)
