Emerson Gal’s Guide to LA: The Glam Intern

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Emerson chapter.

I have two months left in Los Angeles. How crazy is that? Time has flown by, and I’m now realizing all the things I’ve done so far. When I talk to my friends and family back home, they think my life is ultra glamorous and cool, basing this mostly on my Facebook pictures. But, quite honestly, my life is anything but glamorous. I work four days a week and attend classes, all while trying to have a social life. I wake up at 5:00 a.m. almost every day just to get to work on time, and am working non-stop until bed. The hard work has paid off, however, which is where some of the perks come into play. Since I intern at E!, I’m offered amazing opportunities. Let me break it down:

1. Lindsay Lohan’s latest court appearance
Yes, I was there among the media circus. I got to see her fabulous outfit, the paparazzi frenzy, and I even made it on some national news coverage, but in the background, of course.

2. Stand-in for the 2011 Grammy Awards
I walked the red carpet a day before the Grammy Awards! They had us each wear big name tags and slowly follow the carpet all the way down. All volunteers had to stop and pose at certain cameras, and I was even pulled to be interviewed, having to pretend to be Hayley Williams from the band Paramore. The host asked me how I felt about getting “girly time” in a group full of guys, and I had to play along and act like I was her. I had an awesome time, and got to watch the reporter ask the same questions to Williams the next day on the carpet.

3. Grammy Show Rehearsal
Rehearsals started for the Grammy Awards the Thursday before the actual show, and I was lucky enough to shadow a reporter and sit in on performances from Arcade Fire and Lady Antebellum. I also got a sneak peak at the seating cards!

4. Attended a Fashion Police Taping
This show is hilarious. Red carpet icon, Joan Rivers, rips apart celebrities for fashion faux paus. (If you haven’t seen it, tune in for the next episode.) After the show, I got to chat with her about when she reported from the red carpet. I grew up watching Joan Rivers, and it felt great letting her know how much I enjoy what she does. She doesn’t hold back a thing, and boy is she fierce!

5. Audience member for an Academy Awards countdown show
I spent my Oscar Sunday in unorthodox fashion From 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., I was a part of all-day coverage, acting as an audience member for a pre-show and post show all about the Oscars. I saw celebrities Holly Madison, Audrina Patridge, Whitney Port, and the Kardashian sisters. The morning was amazing, but, I have to admit, the post show was the most fun. It was like we were in a chic, cool bar, just being filmed. They served the 21+ crowd delicious drinks, and we mingled for a few hours. The coolest part, however, was that I made it on TV! My friends from Boston were texting me every time I popped up on screen.

This is just a small snippet of what I’ve done so far. I’ve gotten a lot of great networking opportunities, and it’s been so fun meeting and interacting with celebrities, and doing it all for work. Not only do I have two months left in LA, but only two months left until graduation. Therefore, I’m soaking up these opportunities while I can, and am having a blast while doing it.

Until next time! This “glam” intern is signing off.
