Lose the Freshman 15: My first step toward healthy

No rules. No parents. No structure. When I first arrived at U of I in the fall of 2008, I was ready to be on my own. I was excited for new faces, new challenges and a new lifestyle. College years are supposed to be some of the best of your life! And so far, for me, they have been. I’ve had more fun than I could’ve ever imagined. Unfortunately, my physique has taken the brunt of it.

The freshman 15 was quick to make itself at home on my stomach, arms and thighs. My motto so far has been you’re only young once, so have fun. I never shied away from late night pizza or the magical hangover cure that is McDonalds breakfast. My motto should be you’re only young once, so take care of yourself, and I haven’t been.

It’s not an issue of weight — I’m not fat. I love my body and I want to take care of it. I want to be more confident and feel good about how I’m treating my body and how my clothes fit me.

So, for the next 10 weeks, I will be blogging about my serious attempt to be healthy and lose a little weight. Other Her Campus Illinois writers will be making guest appearances, while also helping me along the way. And with SELF Magazine providing me with a diet and exercise plan, I’m sure to see success.

I’m thankful to have this opportunity to do something that I love (writing), while learning how to take better care of something that I love (my body). I can’t wait to share my journey with you, and hopefully inspire you to join me along the way.

It won’t be easy — with formal, my 21st birthday, my best friend’s 21st birthday and a trip to Las Vegas in my near future, maintaining a healthy life style will probably be harder than I am prepared for. But, if you know me at all, then you know I don’t take kindly to excuses. I’m the type of person that believes anything is possible if you try hard enough — and I will try my hardest.

Tomorrow is day one. Are you as excited as I am?

Smell ya later Chipotle,

Samantha

I am a junior studying News-Editorial Journalism at the University of Illinois. When I'm not writing and editing for HC Illinois, I work as the Features Editor of the Daily Illini. I am also the vice president of the Society of Professional Journalists on the UI campus as well as the computer chair for the Iota chapter of Delta Gamma. Writing is my passion and I hope to one day move to New York City and work for a magazine, writing feature stories and investigative pieces. I love HC Illinois because I have so much fun writing stories for collegiettes™and reading stories by my amazing peers.
