For all you lucky ladies heading off to a fabulous tropical destination for spring break, it’s time to pull out your favorite bright sun dresses! But when you’re dancing the night away in a bright turquoise dress, you want your outfit to steal the show – not your makeup. How do you create a makeup look to balance out a bright ensemble?

Take a cue from Mandy Moore, whose picture-perfect Oscar makeup brought out her natural beauty without detracting from her brilliant sapphire gown. Celebrity makeup artist Kayleen McAdams explains, “We had to balance out her look because of the [bright] dress.” Her Campus investigated how to recreate Mandy’s pretty Oscar look:

The goal is to create a clean, elegant look that gives you enough color for your features to pop, but not so much as to put your makeup in center stage. Use a sheer matte foundation to achieve a matte face, then dot illuminator and blush onto the apples of your cheeks for a rosy shine. Opt for a simple eye with shadow in a neutral color, black eyeliner, and two coats of black mascara. Finish the look with a flushed peach lip.

Check out the NARS products McAdams used:

Face:
Pro-Prime Pore Refining Primer (exclusively available at Sephora, coming Spring 2011)
Sheer Matte Foundation
Copacabana Illuminator (available Spring 2011)

Eyes:
Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base
Silk Road Duo Eyeshadow
Black Moon Eyeliner Pencil
Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara

Lips:
Hopi Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil (available Spring 2011)

When you’re packing your bags for spring break, make sure to throw in a few chic, neutral shades into your makeup bag. It’s a more sophisticated alternative to matching your eye makeup to your outfit – think Mandy Moore at the Oscars, not Mandy Moore from A Walk to Remember!
