Dare to debate Gordon Morrisette

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rutgers chapter.

Ever met someone who has so much on their plate and appears to excel in everything they do? Welcome to the life of Gordon Morrisette, sophomore of Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences. As Director of Policy at the Roosevelt Institute, active member of the Rutgers Novice Debate Team, and one of the founding fathers of Kappa Delta Ro he still manages to maintain a 3.9 GPA.
The Roosevelt Institute, an organization on Rutgers Campus that encourages young people, in a unique form of progressive activism,  to become leaders and promotes their ideas for change. As Director of Policy, Gordon organizes members into groups specializing in various topics such as Healthcare, Energy, and Global Affairs. Gordon and other members create “Policy Memos” or brief articles that distill key facts on each topic. These are then submitted to government officials and ultimately are considered for implementation into legislation.

Not only does Gordon use the power of persuasion as Director of Policy in the Roosevelt Institute, but he serves as a key member of the Rutgers Novice Debate Team. Here he and his partner, Ashley Novak, debate on a plethora of topics. They must present their idea, or “resolution” before an opposing team. The hardest thing about Debate, he says, is thinking of the cusp and developing ideas and arguments instantly. Collectively, Rutgers is ranked 4th Novice Debate Team nationally and Gordon and Ashley are ranked 13th and 2nd best speakers, respectively.

Alongside The Roosevelt Institute and Debate Team, Gordon is one of the founding fathers of Rutgers chapter of Kappa Delta Ro. Unlike some other social fraternities, Kappa Delta Ro’s initiatives are more community service oriented. Their latest project has been helping find ways for individuals to publish short stories. Within the next month look out for more information about Kappa Delta Ro’s first 5k Charity Event.

But the most admirable trait of this Campus Celebrity is not his coveted GPA or his involvement in numerous activities- but his humility and nonchalant attitude. Gordon simply laughs off the compliments and graciously accepts them. Rather than brag about his successes, he simply acknowledges them and accredits his surrounding club and fraternity members. In his spare time Gordon loves playing ping pong, reading, and running.
