While assembling this playlist, I was surprised at the lack of Irish music I had, especially considering my Irish heritage and plans to study abroad in Cork next semester. Sure, I had Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, and U2 covered, but a St. Patty’s Day playlist for Thursday’s Faneuil Hall Crawl needs more diversity than that. After doing a little more research, I discovered that many of my favorite artists – such as Damien Rice – are Irish. Van Morrison, whose “Brown Eyed Girl” is one of my favorite “songs you have to play loudly when they come on the radio,” also has roots in Belfast. Could Van Morrison’s hit have been the unkown sequel to “When Irish Eyes are Smiling”?
Being immersed in the culture of Boston (and Boston College in particular), you can see how this sense of Irish pride has helped shape the society we live in today. So take advantage of the great opportunities to discover it at BC. Watch the Irish dance team perform or take one of the amazing Irish history classes (I recommend Professor Savage). Last but not least, have a happy St. Patrick’s Day and try not to over do the Irish Car Bombs (you know who you are)!
