Alumnus Spotlight: Taye Diggs

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Syracuse chapter.

Film, theatre and television – Taye Diggs has done it all and looked good while doing it! The 1993 alum of the Department of Drama in VPA is well known for his role in the Broadway production of “Rent” and leading role in the television series “Private Practice.” He made his show business debut in the ensemble cast of the five-time Tony Award winning play “Carousel.”

Diggs, the oldest of five, was born in Rochester, New York. He didn’t let his small town upbringing from stopping him from dominating on the big screen and beyond. He was nominated for over 11 awards including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for his role in “Chicago” (which he won). Diggs then moved from stage to television in 1998, and he made his film debut in “How Stella Got Her Groove Back.” Recently, Diggs took home the 2009: Image Award – Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for “Private Practice.”
What could possibly make this magical story of success any better than a great romantic ending? Diggs appeared alongside Idina Menzel in the Tony Award- and Pulitzer-Prize winning “Rent,” an off-Broadway production of “The Wild Party” and temporarily in the production of “Wicked.” Soon enough sparks were flying and they got married in January 11, 2003; their son, Walker Nathaniel Diggs, was born on September 2, 2009.

Taye Diggs is proof to all Syracuse University students that if you put your mind to it you can do anything – one day we can all look back and realize that it all started for us at SU, walking across the quad late for class, just like it did for him. Who knows how many people you see during your day to day routine could be the next Taye Diggs and dominate the acting scene!

Elora likes pina coladas and getting caught in the rain...but only warm rain, and especially rain that's packaged in summer thunderstorms! The sophomore magazine journalism and English major is an assistant feature copy editor for SU's independent student newspaper, the Daily Orange, and is a contributing writer for GALA Magazine. She is also a brother in the community service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega. Elora has country music on her iTunes for every possible mood and she will never turn down a Dave Matthews Band concert, a trip to Panera Bread or a pickup soccer game. Although she's not sure exactly what she wants to do after graduation, she hopes to use writing to make a difference in someone's world.
